4th Gen. C-10

Well here goes nothing! I am beginning a frame-off, resto-mod on a 1969 C-10. The story starts back in 1969 when my grandfather-in-law (1st Gen.) purchased the truck. A year or so late he "sold" it to my father-in-law (2nd Gen.). Fast forward to June 2010...the FIL decides he's tired or driving a truck without power-steering, A/C, power brakes, etc. I manage to talk him into giving me (3rd Gen.) the truck and have been using it as a daily driver up to now. The goal is to really update the inner workings of the truck and keep a mostly stock exterior with the goal that this will become my son's (4th Gen.) first vehicle. The best thing is that my son is psyched to have this as his first vehicle and plans to help as much as he can (he's about to turn 8)!!!

Here are some pics (one from 1970 and the rest from 2006 and finally one with my son from a few years ago sitting in the truck for the first time!

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Plans:

As She Sits:

1969 Chevy C-10 LWB with matching topper
307 engine with over 200,000 miles (1 rebuild at 160,000)
3OTT transmission (Not sure what gear ratio right now)
NO Power Steering
NO Power Brakes (Drums)
NO A/C
NO Working Radio
Stock Stance
Very little rust (that I know of) Mostly in the rocker panels

Our Plans For Her:

Get rid of the topper
350 ZZ4 engine with a Vintage Air Front Runner System (Anyone have one of these? Thoughts?)
700R4 Transmission and probably change the rear to 3.73 and change out the column for the automatic
Add Power Steering
Add Power Brakes and upgrade to Discs all the way around
Rebuild the front and rear suspension and change to a 2 1/2"/4" drop
Add Vintage Air System
Run 17/8's up front and 17/10's in the back (Not sure what wheels yet)
New gauge cluster
Remove the broken AM radio and put the delete panel back in. I plan to get some sort of setup to connect a smartphone to a stereo receiver via bluetooth.
Remove the bench and replace with 40/20/40 seat/console similar to the one in "It's Just a Pick-up"
Move the gas tank from the cab to the back of the bed

Paint scheme is going to be like the blue/silver truck but I am going to change out the blue for a dark cherry similar this.

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Dont blow it apart! Also keep the stock color! It will lose its identity otherwise!

Heres mine in the same color, worse condition. Eventually i planto have it repaintedin the stock color.

I'm kind of with wideside on this one. It looks to be in amazing shape as it sits. I really like the color too. I do agree that A/C and upgraded brakes are a great idea. That's a great family history it has too. Good luck with your truck

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Thanks for the compliments on the truck everyone! I have gotten quite a few responses saying that I shouldn't take it apart. I do understand that point of view but I am also looking at this as another possible career after my current one ends (only 17 years left). Plus I have my wife's FULL support...at least right now!

Thanks for the support!

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Thought I would do a quick update on where things stand. I am now 3 weeks into the disassembly (moving a little slow). Here are the pics.

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Looks like a really sweet truck to start a build with! I personally would keep that color of that old girl, but that's just me...

Also, What's your plans for those mirrors your head mechanics pulling off? Wanna sell them?

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Number98...I'm not sure you would want them. The passenger side mirror busted out the first week I had it (I wasn't used to backing the truck out of the garage and clipped it on the door). The support rod inside the mirror assembly had rusted out just leaving a little bit at the top and bottom along with the end caps that hold the mirror in. I pitched all those pieces. The same was true of the driver side as well when I disassembled it. Sorry.

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

Got a little more done today. Took off the passenger door, removed the rubber floor mat and took out the seat. Found the build sheet taped to the rule tank cover. The floor looks really solid exempt the driver's side rocker panel. Any idea where i can find the codes to decode the build sheet?

Re: 4th Gen. C-10

6 weeks into the build and I finally got everything stripped out of the cab. So far rust repair looks to be:

Driver's side:
Inner and Outer rocker panels
some of the floor next to the rockers
rear cab corner

Passenger side:
Outer rocker panel
rear cab corner
rear cab support

Here are pics of it stripped.
