weird T case noise help

I have a NP205 mated to a TH350. I put the tranny and T case in assuming everything was good, but I had no history. When I let off the gas in 2 wheel drive it sounds like the t case or tranny is real sloppy like a gear is loose. Only does it once in a while. Anyone ever heard this? My plan is to drop the t case, possibly rebuild, but I wanted some input 1st. New rear driveline, no obvious loose or bad parts. Thanks, Dave

Re: weird T case noise help

The did shaft that connects the output of the transmission to the input of the transfer case can wear out over time and allow some slop. That may be your issue, or some of it. The spud shaft is in the adapter between the transfer case and the transmission.

Re: weird T case noise help

Here are a couple of links to info for a rebuild if you need it.

http://www.quad4x4.com/New_Process_NP205_Parts.html

http://www.akfabshop.com/alaskaoffroad/tech_2.htm

Also the pic shows an old adapter shaft with the bearing and the box is the part number for a new shaft that eliminates the bearing (not needed). If you zoom into the pic the old build up shows the bearing in place. A new adapter shaft will be machined straight across except for the snap ring groove. The trans to T-case adapter is the weak link, the seals will allow transmission fluid to transfer into the T-case and conveniently fill it up for you (this is why I replaced the adapter shaft, the seals had worn grooves into it)....this doesn't make any noise though, until you find this out and start swearing...!

X2 on the pinion check.....

Re: weird T case noise help

I have another NP 205 but not sure what tranny it was mated to. Is there any differance? I am guessing the adapter is diferrant.

Adapter and spline count would be the major differences, depending on what it was behind.

Re: weird T case noise help

I agree with Ryan, the slop could very well be in the adapter between the trans and tcase. Another item that causes a lot of slop and racket on a 205 on decel is a loose idler shaft. A couple 205s ago I had a horrendous noise and vibration on a light coast and after ripping into it the idler was so loose you could grab it and actually shake it around. Surprisingly the bearings were still good and it just needed the big nut tightened up.

Re: weird T case noise help

started pulling it apart today. T case is definately full of tranny fluid. Didn't feel anything wrong with the pinion shaft.
