What is best NV4500 oil?

People tell me Castrol synthetic. I am having a hard time finding it around here. Must I special order this gold? I have these brands available local. Mobil 1 synthetic, Royal Purple synthetic and a couple others. Prices range from $9 up to $20 for the Mobil 1. I just busted my nuckles rebuilding this trans and don't want to make a wrong move on the oil. This is for my work truck and grain hauler.

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

the GM or dodge fluid is what i run. i forget the name of the fluid but it is the same from either brand. its not cheap, but it is what the syncros want.

Chrysler # 4874459
GM #12346190

castrol syntorq is also the OK i believe. i usually run the dealership stuff. who ever has the better price. there are a few places on the net that you can order it as well.

Castrol SynTorque 75W-90.

The GM dealer part number is PN 12346191. It is the exact same oil.

Dodge calls it synchromesh. We get it from our supplier in Minnesota and it's about half the price of every where else.

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

OK guys, I did more checking last night and the general agreement is to use Castrol Syntorq (Watch that spelling closely) and Dealer oil. I had purchased some Royal Purple and some told me that was the worst thing I could put in the trans. Returned that last night. I have a connection with GM so I will find out today about oil from them. Thanks

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

Long thread on the dodge forums.. the oil is like gold ... unless you are crafty and cross it with a GM part number and buy it for 5 bucks a litre on sale in Canada anyway

gm (PN 12346191) this is one of the gm part numbers

$25 dollars a litre taxes in ... OUCH!
mopar-4874459 subseded 4367579 or vice/versa costs even more!
I used the factory fluid then if I have a synco go bad I can't easily blame the oil I used; but if i used anything else well...

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

I guess a 75-85 GL4 oils is what's recommended. Don't use GL5 oil, the additive package messes with the synchronizers and brass components.

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

NV4500’s are a finicky transmission to begin with I personally won’t take chances with any oil other than the OEM oil even if it does cost a few bucks more per quart. I agree with the part numbers Ryanroo posted.

I do like the idea of added capacity though. We'll see how the coolers and added capacity workout in time.

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

We've ran the coolers that are all aluminum and have had good luck with them. On 2nd gen dodges you can't run the LH side one though.

Re: What is best NV4500 oil?

Well, I could not find any GM oil around here. I did find Amsoil synthetic. The label states that it is a direct replacement for GM part no.12346190. It has just a light oil color to it. I put four qts in for now. On my test drive it shifts very nice. It does have a slight werring noise when in motion. First time I ever looked at the inside of one of these. It has been a challenge. Thanks.

Outten, Quigley, Faulkner, and Kelly could have gotten the fluid for you. All are within 20 minutes of you.

You are right with the fluid level. The capacity is one gallon.

Synchromesh is for the nv1500, nv3500, and nv5600. It's about the same consistency as 5w30. It's not recommended in the nv4500.

Both gm and dodge use the synchromesh name.

I'm running the same stuff, no problems after approximately 8500 miles. Easy to get too.
