Welcome to the board. Sorry about the delay in responding to your question. I'm not sure I understand your problem though. Is your tail shaft broken? It only contacts/engages the plate when it is in the unlocked position. In the locked position the tabs on the tail shaft just push through the plate....

The tab is worn and does not engage after the key is turned to the lock position and then to the unlock position. So I have to leave it in the unlocked position all the time.

I don't know if it would fit or not Thom.

I still don't think we are on the same page here. The unlocked position is when you can push the outside button in and open the tailgate... The locked position is when you push the outside button in and it will not open the tailgate. Any chance you can post a couple of pictures of your latch & lock assembly?

When I can, I will remove the assembly, photo it and try to explain my issue better. May be a while?

Re: Need A Key For Your Suburban Tailgate Lock?

What was the original key configuration on a 1965 suburban? One ignition key and one key for the doors? My suburban has a different key code on every lock.

As far as I can tell all locks keyed the same....

Adding a few pictures to the thread for one of our members. The pictures show the lock cylinder apart and where the small wave washer fits. The wave washer holds the shaft onto the lock cylinder.

I just want to say thanks to LockDoc for sharing this info. I just followed his instructions and pulled the lock cylinder out of my 68. There wasn't a code (locksmith said they were usually on the glove box cylinder) but he was able to make me a couple keys. Got it all back together and installed and now I can lock everything up. Thanks again man. Very helpful info.
