Bolt in replacement headers

Hi!

First time posting, but I have been lurking for about a year.

This is my 1972 C10 350

Anyway my question is, are there any bolt in header replacements for the short stock manifolds?

I dont have any equipment to perform anything than a bolt in replacement. All the local shops are asking at least $200.

First off. Welcome to the board. Good looking truck. We dont see many here with flatbeds. Its cool. So you are wanting to replace some headers with new headers or replace stock rams horn manifolds with? Either way you will still a muffler shop to hook them up.

Re: Bolt in replacement headers

I don't really see any benefit to replacing the stock exhaust manifolds with equal length headers. Headers are advantageous in the upper rpms. If you are truly budget minded and have to have headers, the good ones aren't cheap, and the cheap ones have thin flanges that will have you spending more time under the hood, than in the drivers seat. The only reason i bring that up is you mentioned $200 from a shop, and that isn't a bad price. what are your reasons for wanting headers if you don't mind me asking?

I was living in Chicago. I didnt want to wake up to a missing carb. The hood is still chain locked, but the chain is shorter.

Re: Bolt in replacement headers

You're far better off putting glass packs, flowmasters, or some other loud muffler on it than changing your manifolds to headers. Cheapest possible option (and I don't advocate it) is cheap long tubes with glass packs and turn downs bolted to the collectors. Ballpark minimum: $350- 400. You'll probably have to change your plug wires and routing as well.

Re: Bolt in replacement headers

You can achieve louder with just a muffler change. Much cheaper than putting on headers.

Re: Bolt in replacement headers

i ran flowmaster super 40`s on mine with ramhorns and it does sound real nice. its actually pretty difficult finding good fitting headers for our trucks that do not hang too low. im sure someone here thoough can give you a make and part # for you

Re: Bolt in replacement headers

Stock manifolds and 2 1/4 pipe flow good enough for 400 HP per the performance muffler shops i have talked too.

I looked up exhaust pipe flow rates on google one time and the sites i found also agreed with the performance muffler shops i talked too as well..

I had my headers for 20 years along with 2 1/2" pipe, i finally said to hell with it and went back to stock manifolds and 2 1/4" pipe, asside from not hearing that lumpy sound any more and per seat of the pants feel i can't tell any difference.

I agree.

My '72 had ceramic coated stock manifolds, series 40's (Flowmasters), and 2.5" pipes plumbed all the
way out the back.

Here's what it sounded like at idle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxRy_sAmJYo

Although I have headers on RAT, and I stuck with the series 40's because I like 'em. The muffler guy talked
me into 2.25" pipes. I'm happy with the sound. RAT's a stocker.

The '72 was pretty "cammed up".

There's another vid or two of mine on YouTube with RAT's exhaust front and center...both driving and just sitting
in the driveway... if you want to hear headers (Hookers) with 2.25 pipes and series 40's.

But I'd definitely go with stock headers... and I'd feel good about 2.25" pipes. The sound really depends on who's listening,
where you're sitting, where your mufflers (and pipes) are hung, how much sound deadener you've applied (that's for the driver
and passengers), and which mufflers you decide to run.

Ok, thanks you guys saved me some cash. I will stick with the manifolds. I may pull them out and paint them, to spruce up the look.
