TH400 Rebuild Kit

Hey guys,

I'm looking to rebuild my TH400 and have looked a hundred different kits. I am thinking about this one on EBAY http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Th400-Alto-Re...-/171338232536.

Does anyone have any experience with these EBAY kits? The parts look to be good quality but without a parts list it is anyone's guess.

Also, I am not running really high horsepower (350 - 400). Should I upgrade the sprag or will the stock sprag be sufficient.

Thank you,
Bill

Re: TH400 Rebuild Kit

If it's going behind an SBC with under 350 lbft of TQ... the TH400 is overkill anyways and will be just fine in stock form.

Can't comment too much on the quality of the kit as I haven't got a lot of experience building transmissions.

Re: TH400 Rebuild Kit

That is the same kit I was going to buy for my th400, but I ended up deciding to go with a 4l80e. I know Monster Transmissions has several rebuild kits available as well. If you are going to tackle this on your own, I would go to a reputable transmission shop and talk it over with them. They may have a kit that they use in their rebuilds in stock. Plus it wouldn't hurt to get to know them, in case you run into a snag during the process. As far as upgrading the sprag, no. The th400 is plenty stout for a mild, even hot sbc. They survive behind big blocks with 500 ftlbs in stock form if they aren't abused. That being said, I'm sure there are a few tricks and upgrades that you will want to do when you have it apart. That's where talking to the trans shop will come in handy.

Re: TH400 Rebuild Kit

Try transtar for your rebuild kit. I have a c10 that I built its 700r4 with a transtar kit in 1997 and with 300000 miles on it. My newest project is a c20 and I am going to rebuild it's the 400 next weekend and the transtar kit is $85.00 but that's just seals, clutches and bands.

Appears to be a very inclusive kit. In order to utilize all those bushings you will need a lot of special drivers.

Re: TH400 Rebuild Kit

Thanks for the feedback fella's. this kit looks to be the same as transtar's kit. Matter of fact I think it is just a different user from transtar posting this ad. Anyway, I'm going to pull the trigger on this kit and make my voyage through the black box they call a transmission. Look's like the '68 is going up on jack stands for the summer. lol

Re: TH400 Rebuild Kit

Went and bought this kit. Everything was good except for the bushings as they were damaged during shipping. I called and they sent a whole new bushing kit. I did have to pay for the expedited shipping as it was going to cramp my Memorial Day weekend plans. Otherwise the kit was exactly as described. I did have a problem with the reverse band. No matter what, I could not get the drive assembly to fall into place with the new band. Everything went together after deciding to use the old reverse band. There really wasn't any visible issues with it so I decided it was low risk.

The rebuild has about 1000 miles on it now with no issues other than fine tuning the modulator. I have begun to feed it hot suppers at stoplights and it holds well. I did put a shift kit in so the shifts are good and hard with little tire chirp between 1st and 2nd.

Overall, the rebuild was pretty straightforward when using the ATSG manual for TH400. Took me about as long to clean everything as it did to put it back together. Probably 20 hours of total time and that includes a few beers to keep cool!!!
