Choke cable for 69?

Hey all,

Picked up a 69 LWB fleetside a few weeks back, it ran but wouldn't idle and couldn't drive because the brakes needed bled. Ended up rebuilding the carb, which is an edelbrock 1405 (600 CFM with manual choke) doing a few other things but it's hard to start cold because my choke cable is bound up.

The truck sat for around 18 months, through 2 harsh Indiana winters. I think that didn't help matters. Haha. Anyways, I'm thinking the choke is routed poorly and is just too long for this truck. But I don't think the 69 came stock with a choke, so I don't know where to go for a replacement.

It seems that the early to mid 60s had choke cables...Would one of those work? Or do you guys have a better setup? Thanks in advance!

if edelbrock made the carb thats where I'd go for a choke set up .If not then many of the autoparts stores carry generic choke cable set ups. I like a manual choke.lots of control over start up procedure, especialy in winter

I have a 1405 w/ a manual choke on a '71 GMC Jimmy, 350 V8...
I used a vendor-supplied choke knob, bezel and cable. I put two 90 * bends in the very end of the cable wire. It slips into the tiny hole on the choke linkage. It will twist out when I need to work on the carb.
I drilled a 1/2" hole in the Instrument Panel where the choke knob goes [under WIPERS] and it works great. Looks as factory as the OEM one in my '68 C/10. If you look on the back of the panel there's a raised 1'' circle under the wiper hole. Drill thru that. On my '71 there's also a 1/2'' hole in the metal of the dash. Choke [or manual throttle] mounts to this.
I think I got the knob, bezel and cable from LMC.
Maybe pix tomorrow.

Run of the mill parts house cable should get you going. Or, lube the heck out of the one on the truck to free it up. BTW, welcome to the forum, pics of your truck are a must.

The previous owner already ran it, it sits in a bracket that goes under the steering wheel, then goes through the dash, through a hole in the firewall.

Okay, since I'm doing this thing on a budget...I'll remove it and soak it in oil or something. Haha. If that doesn't work, I'll just pick up another universal kit from advance or something. I just hate how ridiculously long it is. Maybe I could cut it down......

I'll get a thread and some pics up soon. This truck has some interesting history, and I need to scan some polaroids.

EDIT: Actually, thinking about it. I'd rather not be stranded somewhere having to pull the air cleaner off and dick with the choke just to start it. I'll just buy a new cable...Going to try an Edelbrock from Advance.

Nah, I had thought of it, but was asking if anyone had a more elegant solution than running a generic 6 foot choke cable around the engine bay.

Ended up removing it, taking the wire out of the sheath, cutting it down, sanding down a bit of rust on it, oiling the sheath, re-installing, added a few better bends and works like new.

No store house needed.

good job that is the way to do it



I will also make up a sheetmetal tab and put it very close to the carb seems to alleviate it getting stiff with time and use// that way it holds the sheath from movin around

Good job Azar! We like to hear the repair problems gone to the good!!! IMO every time you personally fix/repair/replace/build something yourself, gratification is imense.(wish this had spell check!) CDOWNS got the ball rollin again!
