Engine help
Just had our 72 Suburban 350 engine rebuilt and would like
some impartial comments on what we have. Just wondering if anyone could help identify what we have and what kind of HP we can expect. The old cast heads were badly erroded and we opted to replace. Block was a casting 3970010 (now .030 over) ,new pistons are "flattop" , heads have a casting # 14120188 ,cam is a CCS-2 ( Melling ? ) Block mating surface was machined . Intake will be the original cast iron with a 4 bl carb . Ignition will be non points (transistorized ) with matching coil . Exhaust will be original "Ram Horn". This will be a weekend driver maybe pull a small RV trailer (not expecting a 1/4 mile record setter 3.73 rear end) Any ideas on what we can expect for HP or torque? |

Re: Engine help
You have a 'stock as a rock' 350 which will produce likely the same hp and torque as your original motor.

Re: Engine help
I agree. Cam specs are here:
http://www.mellingengine.com/Portals...ifications.pdf You may get some more power than stock due to the additional bore and tuning. The advertised 190hp 350 crate engine that GM sells can be pushed closer to 300hp with a cam change, intake, carb and ignition.

Re: Engine help
I bet it will pump out 200 to 225 hp. .030 over with flat top pistons will gain a little.
It will have good low end TQ to get the heavy rig rollin'. Gary

Re: Engine help
Do you possibly mean 14102188 ???
14102188 -- that's a 350 1988-1993 EFI (Swirl Port) head.

Re: Engine help
No the best head design, but for a stock rebuild they will do okay. They were designed to work with the TBI fuel injection system.

Re: Engine help
Perhaps in the future we will tinker some more with it.My son (who is funding the rebuild) didnt want a lumpy idle so we just opted for a close to stock setup. Sounds like it will be a good combo for our needs. Thanks for your help !

Re: Engine help
Nothing wrong with a stock engine. As much as I love snotty cams, 3" exhaust and loose TQ converters and all that.
Nothing sounds better than a newly broke in stock SBC just purring away at idle through a decent exhaust system. Sounds like... victory! Gary

Re: Engine help
Yeah, strange!
I agree. I found the same info you did with the 20 versus 02. I even looked for both 183 and 193 since my eyes see it as either number depending on the time of day. LOL. I was going to pull out my books at home. If is isn't in there, they don't exist! But that means I have to remember to look... and my brain has been fried after work recently. Heh.

EDIT: they could also be run-of-the-mill replacement heads, which would explain the the later part numbers.
