Dynamat Tips Please

Hi - Tonight Im pulling my seat and carpet and putting in dynamat.

Those of you that have done this already I have some observations and question.

Observations I have made:
- I should paint the part that extends past the carpet onto the firewall flat black.
- I should trim the mat out around where the seat frame bolts in to make sure it bolts down securely and is solid to the floor.
- I plan on cleaning the floor well and using alcohol as prep for surface.

Questions i have:
- Should I put it behind my speaker kick panels?
- Should I put it over the gas tank? I don't plan on pulling the tank to do the rear of the cab.
- I did the doors (1 strip all the way across inside the door and covered all of the holes behind the door panel) should I also cover the metal behind the door panel with one piece of mat?

Anything else I should know leveraging your experience?

Yes to all of that except on the gas tank, it won't help you there. You'll just be wasting expensive material. I'd pull the tank to do the rest if I were you.

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

On any panel that is vertical or overhead I apply a coat of 3M heavy duty spray adhesive to be sure it won't fall off over time. Rust may never sleep, but gravity never blinks. Good advice about doing the panel behind the gas tank. Even if you can just unbolt the tank and tip it forward you should be able to get a good strip across the back panel to cut down its transmitted noise..

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

I have Fat Mat, so much cheaper and does the same job. People say it stinks and melts, but I put it on my generator enclosure on my toy hauler and have not had one issue.

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

Pulling the Tank is way easier then You think . . , If You have left Overs I'll take them ..
I scored some Mat - Not sure what it is from inside a Tractor Trailer 15 yrs. ago ..
It's very heavy and .100 thick approx 2 ft x 24 ft. & 2 ft x 12 ft.
( Gas & Oil don't seem to faze it ) 3M Glue is on the List .

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

When I did my truck I also applied it to the gas tank and it cut down on the noise of the fuel sloshing around substantially.
So from my point of view if you have left over material it was well worth covering the tank.

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

That looks great. Any tips you can provide now after having just completed this?

What did you use to press the material down or roll it down?

Thanks,

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

Hope I don't get slammed too hard hear, but there's a roofing product that is made exactly like all the above names. You can buy it at lowes real cheep. The rolls I bought were 50ft long by 8in or so. My friend had a piece of dynamat that a rep give him and we compared them and could not see any difference but the stuff from lowes was a little bit thicker and had a better aluminum backing. The only cons of this was it did smell a little bit like tar for a short time.but by the time my car was finished and was driving it you never did smell it agian. I did put the factory jute padding under my carpet also. Just my 2 cents. A roll was like 12.00 if my memory serves me right.

I actually used a metal screen welt installation tool. Its what i had and it worked great. I prepped the floor with alcohol and then filled any gaps in material with smaller pieces.

I then covered any exposed seams with aluminum duct work tape.

I saw some rust so I treated it with POR before laying the material.

Ill be laying wiring and carpet down tonight. I figured after getting the carpet where it belongs and wring ran, i'll spray adhesive down along the front where your feet go to keep it in place.

I ran out of material so I only went over the tank and not behind it. Just that one piece over the tank made a difference.

Ill report back after driving it. The carpet barely has any insulation, but the cab stayed cool before.

My only thought when doing this was "man, when I do my 4 on the floor conversion, this will be ugly.

I used to install car audio and people have been using that stuff for ever. I dont know how many vehicles i have pulled that stuff out of and replaced with a quality material. When the weather gets warm it will start to smell. and it will delaminate over time. Cleaning it up will be a royal pain. Basically not worth the savings.

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

I did my doors a few weeks before. My only thought is that i should place a piece on the metal between the door handle and window crank.

Thoughts?

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

The screen welt roller works good for those tight grooves.
I also used my "comma" dolly too help flatten out the wrinkles.

I lined the wall behind and the floor below the gas tank and saved a peice too put on the inside of my gas tank cardboard for when that gets installed.
I also used a jute padding under my rubber floor mat, tried hard too keep all of it hidden.

Really like the way it dont sound hollow or canny at all.

Re: Dynamat Tips Please

I must say it is an amazing difference.
- You can talk to a passenger without shouting.
- I can talk on the stereos bluetooth without shouting (mic is on the steering column).

Along with replacing the two 6x9 speakers under the seat with a Tahoe Bose Subwoofer in the jack corner, I can enjoy music without turning it up all the way.
I have the metal door panels and I put material on the back of those as well. What a difference.

My door parts used to rattle in my 65 Mustang so when I dynomatted it I wrapped a piece around the door latch rod and window lock rod. The extra "weight" of the material keeps them from rattling, along with new nylon snap connector thingys.

Nice work! I have the Fat Mat as well and will be rolling this stuff in very soon. The products that are designed for automotive interiors (Dynamat, Fat Mat, B-quiet, Lizard Skin, etc.) don't have the tar like smell. But I can tell you that the cheaper foil backed stuff that guys buy at home improvement stores does. I have a buddy that did this in his rig with the air duct foil backed tar sheeting from Home Depot. His rig smells like a tar roof...

The whole roll. I don't remember what the amount was. But i did use a couple good sized pieces on my toy hauler generator enclosure before doing the truck.
