I bought both these in 1988. I'm a junior member compared to some of you.

Wow, you guys hold on to your vehicles like they are family. I suppose in a way they are. A lot of good memories in them. Most people don't own a vehicle for more than 5 years tops.

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
I bought my 71 in 1984, it was green & white. I took it to Denver NC that following year and had it painted red. I wished i took pictures before I had it painted but hind sight is 20/20 they say. 35 years I've owned and drove it. It was my daily driver up until about 3 years ago, now it's a weekend car show ride.
The pictures are when I first painted it and got it back. Then the second time and then the last time.

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
Have had the SS since 1984. Didnt look like this when I bought it. Uncle bought the lark in the early 70's. He passed in 2001 and I ended up with the car. He had done all the metal work I painted it and did the interior

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
I thought of you on this one, Leon
http://www.facebook.com/flashbak/vid...94078151/?t=15 I tend to hang on to my stuff for a while, but I've never been fortunate enough to be able to hang on to the vehicles I've had forever. So nothing to brag about. I don't think I've owned a vehicle I wouldn't have wanted to hold on to. Mostly I've had to let one go to buy another or sold because I had no inside storage for them all. I did manage to have quite a gathering with many owned for 15-20 years. I think 22 years is the longest I've owned anything other than my '90 Harley FLST I still own. 18 years seems to be my high average. The '72 in my sig will be with me 18 years on Memorial Day weekend, but it's not leaving. The Harley with paper plates, all geegaw and doo-dadded up in 1st black cherry ghost flame job, stripped back down with 3rd paint job (4th incl. Harley's), and now in basic black so I can repaint any part w/o doing an overall... again. In '03 I had S&S custom build a 96" stroker. It's been a fun time with this bike in all forms

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
Between the time and being from Iowa, you instantly came to mind. People looking at this have to bare in mind people were not comfortable being on TV in those days compared to today, including people like newscasters who did it every day. I'd like to see that video speeded up... would be funny to watch

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
There's some longevity in this thread with people and their cars/trucks. Thought I was a bit of an odd ball not trading in every few years like seems so common or was at least until vehicles graduated to the price of a nice house some years back. Guess will toss my group in the mix here.
'57 Chevrolet 2Dr. 210 - bought in '75 for a toy. Raced for two years plus, decided it was in too good a condition to beat it to death. Now has .030 over 283, cammed, dual WCFB carbs on '57 dual four intake, M-21 Muncie, Mr. Gasket bench seat shifter, headers w/Thrush mufflers, 3:55 posi '71 1/2 ton K10 - bought in '85, rough, road hard and put away wet several times. Then, 4 spd SM465/NP205, 350/2bbl. Was my deer hunting, fishing, fire wood hauling, gravel hauling everything hauling truck. Now not so much. Replaced both doors, bed & tailgate, inner and outer fenders, hood. Cab corners & supports, NOS rockers, NOS window regulators. Now has Edelbrock 600, Edelbrock Performer intake, 350 with TH350, (bad knees suck), tilt, tach, tow hooks, truck am/fm, Line-ex bed liner, custom 40/20/40 buddy bucket type seat. Now treat it a whole lot nicer but still a truck. '71 Chevelle 2Dr HT - first bought in '94 by my middle son while in high school. Graduated, needed something a bit more practical. Bought it from him in '96. Was 350, TH350, bench, column shift. Now, 350, Edelbrock 600 w/Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, built 700R4, factory buckets, console, floor shift tilt, Vintage Air, Thrush turbo dual exhaust, on rallies. New body paint & body bushings. '88 Caprice 4dr LS Broughm - Bought it in '06, last commute to work car , daily driven for 75 mile round trip. Loaded, cloth interior, am/fm cassette, tilt, cruise, AC, PW, PS, Power seats & locks, 305, 4 bbl, 200R4. 214,000 and still going. Plan on putting in a 350 at some point. Still my knock around, use it daily vehicle. '99 Tahoe 4WD 5.7 Vortec - Also bought in '06. Last year for 4WD transfer lever on floor. Cloth, am/fm/cassette/CD, usual PS, PW and locks, tilt, cruise, AC, cargo doors. 209,000 on the clock. Been looking around to replace it but can't find anything we like with similar options and does not have 280,00 or more on the clock. May put another 5.7 in it at some point. That about rounds out the stable here. They all need TLC at times, regular oil changes, tires, battery, what ever it takes to keep them going and dependable.

28 years, I bought my 1991 Chevy 1/2 ton brand new and it is still my daily driver. A whole lot of other cars and trucks have come and gone in that time but I never plan on selling the 91.

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
I still have my first car ,I got it 42 years ago in 1977 , In 1974 while I was walking home from school I discovered it in a garage that happened to be open one day ,the garage was set way back down a long driveway so I only had a limited veiw ,but I knew that I wanted that car , a few months later while walking home from school the home owner was outside raking his lawn, So I asked him if the car was for sale .. He looked up at me with a half glance and just looked back down and started raking the grass without one word to me . that car never left that garage and I never saw that garage door opened again as I walked by there everyday from school from 1974-77
In 1976 I got my first job pumping gas at a local gas station and that guy would come in for gas every saturday never said a word to me other then fill er up with hight test ,then one saturday in June of 1977 he came in said filler up and then he said hey Son remember you asked about the car in my garage , I said yea he said you paint my house and the car is yours , I said ok when. he said when I buy the paint you can start ,28 window big Victorian house took me most of the summer to paint it and the garage to. the day I finished his wife came out gave me title and the keys and told me that her husband said enjoy the car , and come get it when you want . The car had only 3,216 miles on it , the day I picked the car up I asked his wife if it was her car she told me no it was there daughters car they bought for her new and she ran away with some guy to California about 6 months after they purchased for her 18th birthday . this car is very special to me and I would never sell it, even though back in the 70s and in the 80s I could not tell you how many offers I had on this car its a shame I cant even drive it the last time I drove it was in 2001 and everytime I stoped I was asked about it and is it for sale. I had to say it was a clone and not the real deal. the funny part is that I did not even relize what I had untill owning the car for about 3 years. when I took it back out in 2001 I insured it with Hagarty Insurance and got a call from Jim Hagarty himself wanting to look at it and make me a offer on the car,we actuly became friends and I will tell you he has some collection of cars I have seen in person and cars are his second passion his boat collection is second to none. |

Re: Longest you've owned a vehicle? Here's our FIFTY!
I can’t say I’ve kept any one vehicle very long. Had my 64 C20 for 5 yrs before I got rear ended and decided to trade it for my 69 C10. Sold the 69 when I got the chance to take possession of the family truck.
If we can stretch the limits a little then I owned a 1973 GMC 2500 for 45 years. I’m only 37. Dad bought the truck new, sold it to great grandpa when he got tired of it. Grandpa got it after great grandpa died. Dad and grandpa traded back and forth for a while. Dad finally got tired of it in 2012 and I took possesion. The name on the title has never changed just the address (I am the 4th). Sadly last year it had to go to the big parking lot in the sky. A poor restoration in the early 90s led to even faster rust than from the factory. |
