Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

My doors have no rust, so they're good. All I really want out of his doors are the regulators. I want new motors no matter what so I am not replacing them 3 months down the road if they fail... I'll let Del talk to him - if he doesn't come down he can try to sell them to someone else.

From the core support or front bumper, and possibly underneath.

The intake tubes go down & are fed from the intercooler in front (cooled, compressed air feeding the cylinders). There are filtered intake tubes feeding the turbos in the corners.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Hmmm, it'll be this coming week before I hear back from ZZ Fab on modifying that existing Holley intake, but did get an email back from Holley - they say they can custom fabricate an intake to suit my needs - - - for $2,100.00... Did send an email back though to ask if they can match the general appearance of the one they sell if I did decide to go that route - not looking for the look of a sheet metal style intake... Like the cast look - it matches my valve covers - of course I guess I could always paint everything...

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Hmmm, all this work & expense - wonder if I just went with a Whipple cast aluminum twin-screw supercharger if it just wouldn't be easier????? Kinda curious though how we could integrate the air inlet tubing as it shifts the throttle body over, back & angles it a bit...

That would get my vote. Why spend 2100 on an intake when you can have the blower for not a whole lot more.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Well, not sure about the whole "not a whole lot more" deal... The supercharger kits most likely gonna run around $6,000.00 all told, plus the install & re-fab of the intake tubing he already mocked up. Would however be the best bang for the buck overall though!

Waiting to hear back from Whipple about the kits available to me, Mast in regards to their ECM's reaction to the supercharger & the shop about actually putting it in there & modifying everything they already did... Jeesh the drama of it all!

Did you get a pretty hot crate motor? How high is the compression ratio? My vote is for the blower, btw!

Not really, the long block is a new GM LY6 6.0L that Mast added their up-level cam & beehive springs to. Their tune does the rest & made 497HP at the crank on their dyno already. The LS motor is more than capable of handling some boost as-is, so I am safe.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

This should be about what the system from Whipple would look like & I think we could adapt some custom intake tubing to still utilize the air box location we're using - worst case they'd have to rebuild it so the air comes out the back.

Also, I would order it in the "as-cast" look like in the second pic to match the valve covers better - may have them both cleared or something who knows... Shouldn't actually need all the components that come in most kits, so should be able to save a bit there.

I freaking hate the weekends when I am over here - all this running through my head & absolutely no way to get responses to my emails until at least Tuesday morning my time...

That Whipple set-up (or something similar) would look sweet if it can happen. Performance wouldn't suffer either.....

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Don't get me wrong, I know the Whipple isn't a cheap set up. But I see how your building this rig, and I think the 2100.00 would be far better spent toward the blower than just a modded intake. Consider this, you are at 500hp now. The Whipple would put you at 600HP and be able to run all day long with the a/c blowing snowballs at you.

Looking at what your doing with the steps on the nerf bar, I hope you don't mind if I offer another suggestion. Based on my experience with steps, you would have a more functional unit if it ran the full length of the truck.

By making the smaller outer bar full length, and filling the gap with expanded metal, it would accommodate a wider variety of passengers, AND help keep road debris off of your paint.

With that air compressor you've got on there it sounds like you need an air horn for it

Agree with you on the supercharger vs. modded intake argument - just waiting to hear back from Whipple on what they have for my application. One good thing is that they are only 175 miles from the shop doing the work, so hopefully that'll make things go a little smoother if there are tech issues to resolve.

I know what you are referring to on the side steps & will agree that it would protect the paint on the sides better, but personally I just prefer the look of what we have done - it seems to more "fit" the overall look so far & the side still seems pretty "open" which I like.

I assure you, I have no magic "money tree".... I work hard for what I have & have to sacrifice being away from family in order to provide for my family & to have the things that I want in life.

Vehicles in general have always been my pitfall & unfortunately for me this whole ordeal seems to be my "mid-life crisis"... I have a bad sickness called, "can't leave well enough alone"!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Hmm... Mark Romans & I were chatting on FB & he's not sure that the Mast M-90 ECM will simply accommodate the addition of a supercharger so easily... Already emailed Mast to ask them about this, but given it's the weekend I won't hear back for a little bit. Could just take a simple re-flash by sending it back, but may need to send the whole engine back for dyno tuning with that combo...

Guess I'll find out this week.

I hear that! I just now took a job where I could be home to watch my kids grow up! I get the whole sickness thing, I keep telling myself one day I will build a truck to sell and fund my "sickness" but I always get attached to them and it makes them hard to let go!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

The new hot rod with the bandit vs general lee cover has the new holley ram air intake being tested I was more interested in the two car battle and car cameras though lol and my dad put a Whipple on his suburban yearssssss and he loves it but if he had to do it again he would go back to a turbo charged setup but I've driven it many times and it's fine the whine isn't at all noticeable also he doesn't have the boost cranked up because it's not intercooled which is a short story in itself

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Ok!!! So apparently the Mast ECM is programmable - just gotta buy their proprietary interlink cable for $300.00. That means as long as Mark feels like he can do it, we may just be a go for the supercharger!!! Still gotta hear back from Whipple, but keeping my fingers crossed!!!
