Re: Changed my front clip to a 73

Seeing this thread for the first time, I just have to say it looks great.

Kinda funny, several years ago everyone wanted to put the newer front clips on their trucks, now they all want to go the other way. I myself like them all, but I seem to favor the '73-'80 style. Trim, interior, all of it.

Re: Changed my front clip to a 73

I brought it back up because I went to the dmv today to tag my new dually and after a 2hr wait and numerous explanations of how or why my 1974 gmc dually looks like a 1981 chevy it got me thinking about taking it back to the original front clip. Seeing as how the 74 is one of the most popular styles. I live only a few minutes from lmc and classic parts but a few clicks on craigslist proved to be a great source for all the parts necessary to change out the front clip on my old truck.

The DMV actually gave you a hard time because you got a newer chevy clip on an older GMC??? Did they walk outside and look at it? or did you say something to tip them off??

Re: Changed my front clip to a 73

Pops I didn't say anything, I wanted to get in and out as fast as possible. I bought the truck in missouri so in order to get it license in kansas it has to be inspected by the state highway patrol dept. I showed up in my big old red farm truck raised the hood and waited for the inspector to look over my rig. She was probably mid 60s 5'5" long grey hair, I gave her my title and she goes up to the dash to match the VIN but mine is on the rear door panel of the crewcab. So then she notices that I only have 13 digits instead of 17. So then she asks me about the truck, after some small talk she goes inside and then comes back out and says the entire front clip has been changed from gmc to chevy. I was shocked that she even noticed. But after a little more investigation the vin on the frame matches so I was clear to go...ended up getting an antique license plate. So now I'm on the hunt for an original 1974 kansas tag.

I love it! I wish there were more pics & info on the install. I have every intention of doing this to my newly acquired '88 Burb and would love to know the trick on the core support.

I should have taken more pictures for everyone. I will be doing it again on a 85 crewcab dually. I already have a 77' complete clip. When I do I'll take pictures.

Wow I hope I don't run into too much trouble when I try to get my 62 stepside project to pass. I'm using a 62 C30 Cab on a 64 C10 SWB chassis..

Re: Changed my front clip to a 73

Well, the 81-87(91) frontend(complete doghouse---hood+fenders) itself is more aerodynamic than the 73-80frontend. Also a few pounds lighter as well, i think?

The one area that i think any truck can really benefit from is the aerodynamics of the underside----especially the area between the body and the frame. i thinking installing sheetmetal there when i get the chance.

If this is important to any of you, I think you chose the wrong vehicle to start with. haha
