Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Its looking good. Are you going to paint the rims before you put the hubcaps on them? Also are you just going to run it without a rear bumper or are you going to buy one for it?

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

i plan on painting the rims, yes. wire wheel, some primer, and throw some white at them.

and i'm going to steal the rear bumper off my dad's '82 C20 that he parked a while back. he said it's not doing any good out there, so, as soon as i can get it off and get some brackets fabbed up, i'll wire wheel 'er down, and hit it with some paint as well.

any idea at a good color?

i know white is traditional. so, any suiggestions?

thanks for the words Jott, i'm hoping this weekend to start putting the front back on.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

if your cab is white then I would do the white bumpers. With your hubcaps it will make the truck look near original (compared to most these days)

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Mike-
thats kind of what i was hoping for - near stock. and with the glasspacks, it's almost all "period correct", something that could've been done in the 70's. i saw a 60-61 short fleet in town a while a while back, with the white bumper pair. and, it kinda decided it for me. but i thought i'd ask anyway.

67,
I'd be flattered if you stole my paint scheme . haha.

well, off to school. gonna buy some parts today and get back at her asap.

thanks again all!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well!

got that bumper off.

and it almost looks like the old one. almost.

hopefully i can get it roughed and painted up tomorrow. along with my rims.

i may have found a set of tires, 235-75, for $40. if they look alright, and have some decent read, i'll pick them up, and they'll work just fine for now.

and...what i also get to deal with tomorrow.

they're supposed to hang straight. well, they don't. oh well, a little notch, and a new weld bead, and they should be good.

this weekend is looking mighty productive...i'm hoping atleast.

i'll keep you all posted!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

hahahaha

the irony that you posted as i was posting pics...haha.

there's your pics.

and don't you worry. i'm gonna finish it, enough that i can hit the road with it. haha.

i swung by the DMV tonight to get the necessary paper work for a title transfer and registration...all that nonsense. got it all filled out, and pretty soon i'll be heading back there with $112, and leaving with platers. bwahaha...

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well, after a fun morning of skidding out some fire wood, i took the garage!

and with the help of my cohort, aka, Dad, we have successfully fixed the exhaust hang downy issue.

(just for good comparison)

before:

after:

they tucked up pretty good, in my opinion. just took a little notching and welding.

and, since we had the glasspacks off anyway. we decided to lay some pipes with them.

since i had about 2 sticks of pipe left, we did some more notching and welding. I went over every seam in the system twice, by the way. lol. no exhaust leaks for this ol' boy...

and just angled out the side in front of the rear tires. i'm kinda glad i didn't get it bent for out the back - she sounds pretty good! even gooder than before. .

and pretty quiet as well, even inside the garage, which amounts to a big coffee can.

and don't mind the hazyness of the pics...it's not the camera. it's just smoke from testing the sound of the exhaust...lol. the carb is running rich (gotta tune that), and, well, we had to see what she sounded like at some higher R's...repeatedly...bwahaha...

and thats all i got done for today, unfortunately.

hopefully tomorrow i can get the seat and the floor mats back in. and maybe drop the box back on, and start her looking like a truck again. that leaves this week to get the front end on, and get the tires i picked up this morning mounted and on. and....yup.

MAYBE by the end of the week, i can get some plates thrown on the old girl.

....maybe. lol. prolly not, but i can hope.

and thats where she stands for the night. let's hear it!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Ahhh yes, the fresh smell of rich fumes in a northern garage. Brings back all kinds of memories. Either that or the 70s were bad for me.

It's coming along a bit faster than mine (everyones is I think). It's looking good.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

THanks Bill!

it might be coming along faster, but i'll be the first to admit most of my work is sub-par. not really anything to brag about...heh. i just want to get it on the road, and enjoy it. and if it needs another tear down, well. so be it.

nothing like the sting of raw exhaust on your nostrils on a cold night, eh? .

i'm uploading pics, so...back in a bit!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

alright. as promised, pics!

we set the bed on today, and got it all bolted on.

...i tried to avoid showing the waves in the bed sides in the pics, but, pretty sure i failed. haha. oh well. it can be redone.

and...a video, more of a sound clip, of the engine running with pipes on.

you're going to want to just fast forward til the clock says 1:16. thats when i finally got it started. the carb is acting funny, so i'm thinking theres some dirt in the needle, or..well. it just needs to be cleaned up.

and thats what i got done today, aside from watching the Packers stomp the Vikings. oooo...so sweet!

tomorrow, i hope to get the cab insulated and the seat bolted in and all that fun stuff.

then just comes checking the brake shoes, bolting the front end on, doing the ritual fluid changes, and putting the tires on.

and thats where she stands now.

let's hear it!

-Sam.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

something like that Mike.

before, she'd fire right up, but the auto-choke was stuck, so that helped just a bit. so, we un-stuck that, and it started to not have black smoke, and a slight tick went away (piece of dirt on a lifter, we're thinking).

so, yeah. we're clean it up a bit, and it *should* help a bit.

have to wait and see...lol. i'm just glad it's looking like a truck again.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

update!

the engine running issue is taken care of - as i said in my other thread. but, to recap. the "run" circuit on the starter was touching a header tube, making it only run while it was cranking over since the "start" circuit wasn't effected. blah blah blah...life is good. lol.

but! today!

also got the seat belts bolted in, along with the door sill plates on.

i may have to do some adjusting, the driver side door sill doesn't want to let my door close. so, we'll fix that tomorrow.

tomorrow, i pick up my spark plug wire loom, along with an oil filter.

and...hopefully get some more done.

don't worry, if i do, i'll let you all know.

let's hear it!

-Sam.
i officially have a seat again! no more cardboard box! wooO!
