Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

I got a response back, and he would like to have you try the following:

Have him turn the key on and check fuel pressure, then turn key off and see if it maintains fuel pressure or if it drops off, then turn the key back on and then see what happens with the fuel pressure.

The tech wanted this info before providing next steps.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Going out in a min to fix the coolant sensor, on the fuel pressure when I turn the key on it will shoot to 55-60lbs and maintain that for about 30 seconds and start dropping off very slowly like a lb every 15sec or so with the key OFF. When the key is turned back on it will climb to 55-60lbs and maintain.

I will be back in a few and give it a go again

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Sigh of relief that was it, the PCM is now getting coolant sensor signal it starts and settles into a smooth idle with no fuss or smoke

I'm happy, and thank you for the help everyone and mjensen let your friend know I appriciate his/her help too

Next should be the MAF, I have the 5 pin version which to my understanding has the air temp sensor in it. this should make the engine run even better I would hope, and then O2 sensors to finish off the sensor needs.

How appropriate it is that your 1000th post is the one where you announce all of the bugs have been worked out and the engine is running just fine....congrats!

Did not even notice that I crossed to 1000 posts, awesome

Thank you, the truck idles great now, the aftermarket tach even shows right rpm set on the 8cyl mode so the tuner must have changed something to make this happen? Either way, cold start it fires right up and idles at 800rpm. I have 42lbs of idle oil pressure showing too, sweet deal.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Here is what it looks like as of this afternoon. I picked up an engine cover at one of the local yards, cleaned up pretty good. I started it again and checked to see if the alternator is charging and it is

Don't know why so blurry, must be a setting on the camera.

Congrats!!! That's awesome! Always glad to track down information

So it really was just the coolant temp sensor huh?

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

It had to have been the sensor, but the only way I could test it is to unplug it but don't think more raw fuel down freshly honed and ringed cyls is a good idea

Thanks everyone, feels good to hear this project finally come to life.

Ask away, I am learning quite a bit tackling this swap. Lots of wire harness work, new to me engine assembley with the LS platform. Pretty exciting actually, I would not hesitate to do it again knowing what I do now. And also one thing I do enjoy is satisfation of knowing I did it and it works

Cost, still tallying it up but overall it is more expensive so far than my GEN 1 build, not even done yet and that's doing most of it myself. It would be noticably higher if I had to farm some of it out, so to those looking into something like this the more you can tackle yourself don't be afraid to do so to save a few bucks. And it's a great learning experience.

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

More progress, the trans TV cable kit came in, and the VSS adapter was installed as well.

The VSS adapter is a Digital Dakota unit part number 4160, this gives the PCM a signal that tells it the truck is moving based on speedo cable revolutions.

The TV cable adapter is from Bowite Overdrives and is specific to the cable throttle body, my TH700 will work now. I still need to check my thottle to pressure input pressures that will be done lastly.

Engine runs good, idles without fuss and revs very well I still need to find an air intake, MAF, rad hoses, O2 sensors and have the exhaust welded up to my header pipes. It's almost there, I want to drive it

Here is a couple of pics, the BTO TV made easy and the VSS adapter

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Not much to update, just messing with details in the engine compartment this last couple of days.

Tomorrow I am paying a visit to another local wrecking yard that just got in an '02 Suburban, looking for air intake, MAF, O2 sensors, throttle cable ect let's see if I can pick 'em up for a song and a dance.

If so, plans are to have it towed to my muffler shop Sat AM that I use and get the final task done before it's back on the road. Very much looking forward to that, I will keep everyone follwing this build updated

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Bit of an update, a local yard had an air intake, filter box/MAF, acc cable and a couple of darn near new radiator hoses for me on the cheap off of an '01 2500 pickup. One thing I may need to do is relocate my battery to the other side of the support to make room for the air box but I will do more homework on this one.

I will be spending more time with it tomorrow afternoon and shoot some pics. I ran out of time today, had to leave for work just when motivation was hitting me....

All that will be left is 2 O2 sensors and a flatbed to the exhaust shop maybe as soon as Saturday morning

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

More progress, few steps forward, one step back.

Cleaned up all of the parts I picked up, hoses, air tube, MAF etc and installed them on the engine. Hoses were easy, a few minor cuts to fit and all went well. Air intake, fits like a glove but unless I move my battery I will not be able to use the filter box. SO, I may try one of those cone filters before the maf and see how that looks. The flexible tube will give me the room to run one, so to save some cost for now I will try it.

Throttle cable is also in, that was very easy. The hole for the factory cable on the firewall is square, the LS style is round so I took my round rat file and did very minor clearancing and suprise it clicked right in there. The pedal, all that was needed was to bend the rod a little so I can get full throttle and that is it. Not bad for $5.

Now the step back, putting water in the engine, water came trickling out of the bearing hole on the water pump. Bummer, did not expect that, so now tomorrow I will pick one up from Kragen or Autozone and get water in there so I can warm it up a little bit.

Here are a couple of pics as of 5 min ago. Still have work to do so be easy on me

Bummer on the pump. If you haven't removed the fan from the pump before. Rent the fan clutch removal tool when you get the new pump.....much easier than the hard way.

Your engine looks great! Sorry to hear about the water pump. I bet mine will leak too when I get around to the point where you're at. It has been sitting for at least two years now. You are getting some good deals on parts. I'm interested in seeing your throttle cable setup. My engine has a DBW throttle body on it now, but I picked up a ls1 intake to put on there that is cable driven. I haven't decided whether or not to use it yet. Keep up the great work!

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Picked up another water pump from a local yard, much cheaper than a retail store and it works great

Warmed it up to operating temp, and even drove it around the block for the first time

Runs great, really great and so smooth. Lots of power for a stock engine, but I really did not have a chance to do much because it was a short drive and also very very loud Plus with no O2 sensors installed did not want to take a chance with anything unusual that would hurt anything. After that, pedal goes down.

Oil pressure good, warm 33lbs at idle 500rpm and 60+ at 2500 so that makes me relax a bit about my first time building this style of engine.

Next, Tuesday I am on the hunt for O2 sensors then off to exhaust...

I am pretty happy with all of this right now

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

Not much to update, having a hard time finding good used O2 sensors for this 2001 harness, I guess they are 2 year only grey triangle style front so I may have to order them new which is $mula.

And my son had an accident in the family car and the insurance may total it so I have been distracted a little bit. No injuries, just cosmetic damage. Some young girl ran a stop sign not paying attention and wham.

On a side note, my SES light was not working when the key was turned on. I found out that the wire coming from the PCM is a ground not a hot so the other side of the light needs to be connected to HOT not ground. Now it works

As soon as I get the O2's in place I will post an update. It's SO close to being put on the road I can taste it

Re: Shreck's 6.0 build

A little more progress, bought a cone style air filter and found this little jem of a loop mount at Lowes this afternoon for just a couple of bucks. I know this is low buck, but I have spent enought money on this already so I was in the mood for something inexpensive today

Couple of pics, I was able to squeeze the cone filter in the MAF and put a clamp on it for a seal. Then the loop bracket I trimmed for length, painted it black and screwed it to the fenderwell. Works well, and until I decide to change the air intake this will work.
