Speedo question
The speedo hasnt worked since i bought the truck. Someone tried putting in a new cable but it was super long and looped almost up to the firewall. I got a replacement cable the right length but still no go. Last resort i hooked up my drill to the cable, the speedo needle wont move but the odometer was moving? Can this be fixed or do I need another speedo? Could I have been running the drill the wrong way?

It sounds like you need another speedo. If the odometer works with the drill but not the speedo, that more or less confirms it. Used speedos are readily available, and there are threads on here that show you how to reset the odometer. Another option is to get a working, used speedo, and disassemble it and your old one, then put your original odometer on the working speedo.
Bear in mind, I have not done this myself, so I couldn't tell you how difficult it is, but somebody on here has, and they can. Good luck

The odometer number was moving downward which I believe is correct? I have the dash apart replacing the wiring harness so I'll pull the speedo and see what I can find. Thanks guys

Taking it a part isn't hard but be careful you break the stem of the speedo then it's done. The parts are plastic and metal so they can break are wear out running against each other.You can pick new ones up and also find them in the junk yard. All speedo for 67-72 trucks are basicly the same. A few small differences in them but they will inter change.

Just in case you didn't try... you have to run the drill backwards to get the speedo to sweep.
I presume odometers don't run backwards, but maybe you were spinning the drill forwards and that's all you saw because of it?

I have a weird case in my Camaro where if I disconnect the cable at the speedo and run the rear tires, the cable is clearly turning.
If I disconnect the cable at the trans with it connected to the speedo and spin it with a drill, the speedo responds. If you connect the trans to the speed, nothing! My best guess is that the inner cable is too short perhaps, but I haven't solved it yet...

hopefully it's ok if I pile on here...
My speedo was jumping all over the place, getting stuck at 40-50MPH when standing still, making funny noises occasionally at highway speeds, spiking to over 100MPH when on the highway (while driving ~65MPH). I have a 4WD 1972 Suburban. Check out the referenced video. The cable appears to be working as expected, right?
