Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

That's what I was thinking. Technically the adapter is for AA's own bellhousing. It fits now, I'll post up some pictures this evening. Also I have a template for you. It was a little stressful to drill the holes, but the pedal stroke is smooth and there is no binding.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Marcus,
That AA adapter looks frustrating. It appears that you'd have to cut into the cylindrical portion of the bracket in order to get the necessary clearance. I think I still have a few parts that I fabricated to make my own slave cylinder bracket, before I switched to a hydro bellhousing. I never got around to welding it up and adding the gussets but I'll look for it if you want and I can send this stuff up to you if you wanted to just cover shipping. I could probably even finish welding it up if you needed. Let me know and I'll look for it.

I also have a dimensioned autocad drawing of it that I could dig up and post. It's pretty easy to make with some plate and tube.

That would be very cool. I have a friend wanting to go juice, but parts are scarce or very expensive.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Here you go.
If I remember correctly after making the first one and fitting it, I figured that I could move the slave cylinder about 1/4" closer in toward the motor. Also the distance between the slave cyl mount holes may have been just a hair too big.
I can always update the drawing and repost it if you want. But I don't feel like dismounting my slave cylinder to remeasure it.
Also, I can check measurements on the length of the tube from my notebook when i get home tonight, but the length will depend on whether you prefer to mount the slave behind or in front of the bracket.
This was using a hydraulic clutch fork, not a mechanical clutch fork as they are different.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Thanks Jason! I think I have the AA bracket working (after drilling through the boss and ribs from the bottom with a 9/16" bit). If not I will take you up on your offer. Should know later tonight.

Lover, an 89 from a square truck (blazer, suburban, 1 ton crew) will bolt right in with some new holes. A newer body style 89 truck's will not.

Nothing better than a smooth stroke, err at least that is what she said...

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

so now that youve got the bracket mounted, does the bleeder screw hit the motor like mine does? ive got the aa bell and the aa adapter. im heavily frustrated. if the brackets holes were drille a little different then the bleeder would be fine.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

I also did this swap on my 77.

I used the pedal assembly out of an 86 for the hydro clutch pedals. Got the rest of my parts at napa. I made a template off a cab in the junk yard and drilled my holes from that. Worked out reall well. Also it is easier if you remove the steering colum to do this job

The NEW master will NOT have a res with it One of an S10 or chevy truck will work but MAKE sure the rubber line is rated for brake fluid!!

Also to bleed the system I assembled it on the bench and bench bled it. Only way I could find to get all the air out. Then I put the entire assembly in the truck.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Sorry for the slow progress, I finally got back on this today.

OilBrnr, yeah

obijuan, yes the bleeder definitely hits the block now. Just barely, but it makes contact. Looking at Jason's pictures, is bracket rotates the bleeder up and away from the block.

84, sweet truck. I've read through your build before and like what you've done. are your swampers TSL's or LTB's? Love the tall skinny tires with a little lift. Thanks for the pointer on bench bleeding - that is a good idea.

I ran into a few more snags. I had to take a little more material off of the bell housing to make it fit, but now the AA bracket is sitting flush and feels solid. once I had it mounted up, I noticed that the existing hole for the clutch rod is nowhere near the slave cylinder. It looks like the other mounting holes on the bracket for the larger bore slave would line up perfectly, but not the further inboard set. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the fork lined up with the slave (PITA!) and got everything bolted up. I'm not wild about how it looks. If I was going to do it again I would grab a hydraulic clutch fork.

The fork was actually contacting the end of the slave cylinder, so I spaced it back with a pair of washers. Now it just BARELY doesn't touch. There is no way the boot would go on the end of the slave cylinder with as little clearance as there is between it and the fork. Pictures below.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Dang Marcus, I really never thought it was going to be so challenging. I'm kind of surprised.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Me too. So is my wife! I said I'd have the garage tied up for a day or two. Hahaha. I think if I was going to do it again I would pull the bellhousing and trim it down outside the truck. I would also install a hydraulic fork while I was in there. I bet if I did that, I could mount the slave on the rear side of bracket instead of the front, it probably wouldn't hit the block.

At any rate it is done now. If I don't like how it works ill switch the fork once the weather warms up and I can work outside. My one car garage just doesn't hack it. -26F last week but looks like spring is on the way now.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

it would be challenging at all if advance adapters got advanced, with their adapters.
if the clocking of this slave was just a little different the breather would be straight up. cant see any reason why its located where its located.

here was my solution. i used the lower hole and rotated it to where i needed it and "bolted" it on with a little piece of scrap. ghetto, yes. can i bleed it now and will it probably work forever? yes. i also had to bend the bracket to get the pin lined up.

Re: Hydraulic clutch swap time

Everything is cohabitating nicely now. Will take the truck out and play a little this weekend now that all my shocks are stretched out.
