I feel like this is a stupid question, but what are the machined plates (w/ bowtie) on the side of the motor for? Are they for aesthetics only or are they actually covers?

Not a stupid question at all! The side covers cover up the push rods and lifters. Lotta oil passing through there. lol The stock side covers were to plain for my taste so I went with those.
