Check out these wheels

Searching for steel wheels I ran across these, "the custom smooth wheel" at the top of this page:

http://www.earlywheel.com/

I think they would look great with some color or black, either way and different too. Of course with wide white walls and the spider caps. I'm going to call and ask what sizes and backspacing they can make.

I like it. Kinda looks like a donut spare type of wheel. Let us know what you find out.

Perfect, thanks for the tip, the Cragars are only $65. These won't suit everybody's taste, but you have to picture wide white wall tires and air ride with an "old school" look.

Re: Check out these wheels

Hey guys, I ordered these wheels today through Summit Racing. I ordered 15x7 with 5x4.75 bolt pattern and they come in 13mm offset. I second guessed myself on the offset so I called Cragar on a hunch. Their phones connected me direct with the wheel factory I spoke with a dude there and he said they make-to-order and whatever backspacing I wanted would be no problem. So I called Summit back and told them to make the change to 0 offset.

So, if you're in the market for some Cragar wheels keep this in mind!

EDIT: Summit called and charged me another $15/wheel for a "custom" order, also let me know they can't be returned. Frustrating knowing that the backspacing makes no difference to the factory since they are made-to-order. Betcha Summit keeps that extra $60.

Is there another place to try rather than Summit? I don't like the $60 charge that doesn't mean anything other than getting fleeced!

Yes, I'm using MII 11" disc brakes, should be fine with 15x7's but I'll let you know how much clearance I have.

Well I called the factory again just to make sure I wasn't getting gigged by Summit and they confirmed they upcharge for "custom" backspacing. At any rate they're still a good deal. I'd try these guys next time though, especially on the left coast: www.earlywheel.com

Sounds like you got it figured out, but I was going to add in that yes they do charge extra for the custom backspacing...and that actually it's significantly cheaper to order through Summit or Jegs than to order directly from Cragar. Their corporate offices are in Okoboji, Iowa and I believe manufacturing is still in California. Sometimes they mess up the backspacing on custom orders, but they do let you keep the ones they sent that weren't correct for free....

Good info, thanks. They're still a pretty good deal and to get custom backspacing on such an inexpensive wheel is really nice.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind! I'm thinking of painting them marina blue though to match the firewall and dash, maybe with a little metal flake. What do you think?

only because they were also custom powder-coated white. had they been black, they would have taken them back....

and I still haven't been able to sell them... so I see why they didn't want them back

Re: Check out these wheels

Those were originally the wheels that were used for the fake wire wheels with the wire baskets in them in the late 70's through most of the 80's They just power coated them instead of chroming them and left the wire baskets off.

As on my old 51 Merc. The wheels were on my Dad's 85 Olds 88 before that I think.

Crager is doing the recycling thing and is selling them as something new.
