Re: dana 44 axle nut?

I bought a new pinion seal and a
small tube of flexible sealant at NAPA. the flexible sealant is just extra protection, the pinion seal does all of the work.

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

took a run to the auto-wrecker and found a pair of bracket/shields for my d44, they had just pulled them 5 min previously, only $20 for the pair, pretty good deal I think. now just got to wire wheel the heck out of them and paint them after they dry of coarse .

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

there won't be a posi in the front (odds are that way atleast) and the rear would have springs in the differential...

I'd get those blasted and paint them with POR-15 or something tough.

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

wire wheel it is... $20 is a good price, especially for not having to pull them...

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

well that there just made my day!

I did check, the front was 14-43 and the rear was 43-14 or vice versa lol did some math and it should be 3.07

good thing im cleaning the sucker out, it had so much sludge in there it reminded me of that commercial. Should I look at some royal purple or similar synthetic to use in it?

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

My pops-in-law had that posi and he ran 90w w/posi additive/friction modifier..ya know that real stinky stuff in a 4oz bottle. Never did like running sythetic for differentials...just my .02c

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

I run Synthetic gear lube in everything. Not only does it eliminate the need for the "posi" additive, it is just plain better in the first place. It never sludges up, lubricates better, and runs far cooler than conventional gear lube.

Wildstreak, the good thing about your "posi" is that it has some $$value. You can sell it to invest in your Dana60 swap. It won't do you much good in your plans to go with bigger tires anyway. The lowest gears that you can use with it are 3.42.

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

Longhair,

There are some gears available that fit on the carrier though, right? I know they make some thicker ring gears for that reason..

If you are going 1 ton then you will be getting a 14 bolt rear anyway...

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

I bought some royal purple for the ol girl today.

Longhair I was thinking the same thing, I could get the d60 and 14bolt rear to swap in this when I do the lift and swap tires. I have a 68 shortbox 4x4 with all drum that I could put this rear and the dana 44 on or under lol. or just sell the rear and do like you say add to the funds

msgross I was wondering the same thing, if you could just change the ring and pinion?

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

msgross, yes there are, spacers too...but I'm not really a big fan. I've never had a failure because of one, but in a high-performance situation? I just wouldn't trust it. For a mild street driven truck, maybe.

I just kinda figured that Wildstreak was thinking of going with some pretty big tires, and intending to run it hard, plus the Dana60 thing was already mentioned....That's how I would go, and sell off the posi (or hold onto it for the next project)

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

I would have bought regualr gear lube if you are going to swap them later... just to save $$$...

you don't want 1/2 ton axles if you are going over 35" tires or going to wheel it hard...

Re: dana 44 axle nut?

thats what I had been thinking as well, but plans change and stuff happens, so who knows I might just keep this as my dd and go hardcore on 68 shortbox(just have to see how bent the frame is and then fix it) and Ive been dreaming of 69-72 blazer for quite awhile now and if the time was right(by that I mean have the money) I might just buy one of those. for me the royal purple is cheap insurance and peace of mind
