Letting your first build go...
Well I am pretty confident that I have sold my truck. The guy is coming Saturday morning to pick it up and he is coming from about 2 hrs away to get it. He has called me several times asking tons of questions. This is great for the fact that I can tell in his voice that he has a lot of love for these old trucks. But this truck was my first, I have learned a lot with this truck over the years, had lots of memories in this truck.
My dad and I did not have a close relationship while I was growing up. He was a career military man. Serving in the Army as a CH47 flight mechanic, then retiring and taking a civilian job in Korea working on the same helicopters he did in the military. When he did settle back down in the states I was newly divorced with 3 kids, we both had the love for 67-72 trucks, I had one already, he had a 69 since I was 6 or 7 years old. He purchased a project that someone had given up on and we went to build both trucks in his garage at the same time. He has since sold the 71 gmc he built and started building a 67 chevy when he suffered a stroke losing the use of his left side. That's the sentimental side. We did enjoy our trucks together, learning about them together and searching and fighting over parts together. We went to a board meet in Paris,Tn together in our trucks, we went to Boss's house for a board meet where I lost an motor in Salem, MO. We went to another Midwest meet in Kirksville, MO where I dropped a tranny. We went several times to Kansas City, MO for the Midwest All Truck Nationals. Each time we met and made new friends. We went to several local cruises and car shows. I am at a point that if I went to fix the several little things and make the major upgrades that I am really wanting in a truck that I would be tearing my truck down for a complete redo. However if I take on my dads 67 build its at just the right point to make those changes. I am also looking at the point if I sell my truck now I can pay off some bills to hopefully save more for the future project. So I have turned the potential owner on to this website, I really feel he is excited, and it makes it so much easier to turn over to him. But, I think I will have a tear in my eye as it happens. Don't think I will be gone from the website, I have never really posted a lot anyway, but hopefully in the next year I will be progressing on Sammy's "Oddball" project. Thanks to all that I have met here and in person this site has made my first build a great experience.

That is a great looking truck.
I can empathize with you in regards to selling your first build; it's rarely about the truck itself, but more about the memories you make along the way. And those memories are never for sale! I build cars for a living. I put a ton of myself into every single one, and always have memories that go with them. Every time one leaves the shop, it's tough.....I get to start the next one (which I always look forward to), but seeing one of my projects leave is like losing a piece of me with it. I have never been able to get to the point where I see these cars as just a way to make a living. Our trucks are the same way....we love all the memories and friendships that go along with the construction and enjoyment of our trucks; we don't ever really get to the point of building them just for the sake of building them. And I hope we never do. Congrats on the sale of your truck, and best of luck on your new build! Travis Q Posted via Mobile Device |

First off, I have met and talked with Mike and his Dad (board member Sammy) several times over the last few years and I can tell you they are both great guys. I sure hate to see you sell your truck, but I can understand the reasons why you want to build your dads '67. Good luck with whatever happens and I hope to see you at the All Truck Nationals in KC when you get it done. LockDoc

Tough but it sounds like you are doing what you really want to do. Building more things is how you improve your skills anyways
Festus huh? Cool, my wifes family owns Main & Mill Brewing Co. They brought some growlers down this weekend. Small world. |

Re: Letting your first build go...
You have a bad azz looking 68 i would have a problem letting that go too.
Around these parts with rust and what not once you put the time in too fix it all its hardly ever worth getting back what you have in it. Next month will be 26 yrs ive had my car and its certainly not going anywhere, im gonna say the same for my 67 stepper, anything else is free game. I feel your pain buddy. I dont allways pratice catch and release.

Re: Letting your first build go...
I have sold a ton of nice cars and trucks over the years. Each one I have loved (for a time), hated, cussed, sweet-talked, etc. That said at the end when they finally leave the driveway for the last time I look at it like going into the next chapter of a really good book.
"We do what we think is right at the time". Most of us didn't buy these trucks/cars new, nor do we own them till we die. We are just caretakers & sometimes lifesavers for them for a season. Then the next guy has his turn. Will he own it a hundred years from now? Probably not. Maybe someone else will. Cool. After that I personally just move on. Usually into high gear on the next project "I am currently in love with". I also try to do just a little bit better job on the next one.

Re: Letting your first build go...
Well away it went today Beaks arrived as I was getting home from work this morning, we took a ride, I gave him a quick lesson on the air ride (he still seemed a little confused), we handled the business end of it and away it went. I was a little sad however I think Heath will do it right. He even planned to try and clean it up and take it to a cruise tonight.

Re: Letting your first build go...
Reading thru this brings back alot of memories of selling some meaningful, and hard to build dreams. I understand that while you could keep and enjoy your current ride, building a new one lets you progress in your ability and tastes. I could never afford to buy a finished vehicle, so I wouldnt know what its like to show that off, but do know the pride that I built this from nothing.

Re: Letting your first build go...
It happens - sold a 66 to someone "really" interested, it was on a dealer website in <30 days with a rattle can engine paint job for ~$13K more than I sold it for. Lesson learned for me - buying and selling to a stranger = all business. But for you guys, I've got a SPECIAL DISCOUNTED DEAL!!!

Business is business. You can't let emotions get in the way. Money is business. Period. Sad it's that way, but it is. Live and learn is what I TRY to do. "A man that can keep his emotions under control, is a very dangerous man".
