hood hinge bolts

Just discovered new inner fenders hood hinge holes are tapped for 5/16 not 3/8 as original was. Anyone used the 5/16 without problems? Hinge slots are for 3/8, so more slop around the bolts with 5/16. Thinking that massive hood needs the 3/8. Drill 5/16 nut and tap to 3/8 with an added nut on the back for safety?
