water leak in cab, under carpet ?

i notice water under my carpet after i go thru car wash, it shows up at bottom of kick panels and under center of floor pans.
there are no water leaks in the car systems.
is it possible the water is coming in thru the cowl vents then down the firewall/kickpanels and under carpet.?
are there seals /drains under vent cowl i can check/repair?
thanks
Allan

Where under the carpet? Many car washes now have the sprayers the do the bottom of the vehicle. That will allow it to come in in a few places like the clutch pedal pass through and any other place that is low in the floors.

Here is a thread on the kick panel vent repair: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=434587
There are drains between the cab and the fender for the kick panel vent. They do get clogged. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=687764
There are sometimes also holes in the floor. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=437306

Re: water leak in cab, under carpet ?

I had leaks like you mentioned and what I found was that on the inside of the fender well where the side kick panel meets the floor board that it is spot welded and also has seam sealer on the joint. Over the years the seam sealer had dried out and some of it had fallen out. When I washed the truck the water would go behind the cowl extension and leak down to the seam and leak on the inside.
I managed to get it chaulked up with out removing the wheel but would have been easier with the wheel off.

In my experience a wet floor is usually a result of a leak around the windshield.

Re: water leak in cab, under carpet ?

thanks of all the good tips, my kick panels are carpet covered and the vent door assemblies are not there, will remove carpet and seal up the vent openings, see if that helps.i don't need the vents since i have A/C.

Water in the cab is sometimes from the roof gutters. See if the seam sealer has gone south.

Also check the firewall where it meets the cab at the top of the firewall, you have to stick your head under the base of the hood, could be rusted and have holes.

good ideas, already sealed the roof gutters, they were bad, will now check the firewall area.
thanks

mine were in decent shape , some cracking along putty seams, so i just cleaned and rough sanded, then put 2 heavy coats of rustoleum. got a pretty decent paint color match since my truck is patina paint so it worked for me.

Re: water leak in cab, under carpet ?

I had the same problem with my 65 Suburban. Drove me crazy trying to figure out where the water was coming from. Finally figured out it was the cowl vents inside. I used a "putty tape" and havent had a leak from them since but lost all my carpet because of the water.
