1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Well here we go...
Bought the truck about a month ago from a gentleman who said he found it beside a chicken coop, buried in chicken sh*t and dirt. He spent some time on it cleaning it up a bit. Then put new brakes and exhaust. Elderbrock mainifold and carb. He then added the rally wheels and HEI. So some of the stock stuff is gone but seems to be pretty good shape except the normal rust areas. It runs great, I have put about 500 miles on it running around. Note the horse trailer behind it. ( Daughters wedding set up and dismantle hauling stuff with Goldie)
Odometer reads 79XXX miles on it which he was told are actual miles has not been rolled over.
Now what..
I think I will do a frame off and mechanical rebuild nothing wild just stock and seal it up and get rid of the rust and preserve it. Lots of inperation and information here I know I will need it.
A thank you to Captainfab for the once over on the truck, I sure I wil be using that valuable resource.
Anyway here is some current photographs before I start the tear down, I keep putting it off I love driving the truck...

Good looking truck! Does it have an original 283 or 327?

I have this stamped on the passenger side block in front of the head. I thought this was supposed to be the VIN.
Any help?

Re: 1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Well thanks again to Capt. Fab for hooking me up with a great meter guy. So I have started the dismantling of Goldie.
Anybody have any info on the the prior post these numbers are stamped on the front passenger side of the block.
Pictures to follow.
I also need to learn about gearing change 373 to 308. Are the ring and pinion gears the same for the front and rear dif.
Thanks

Re: 1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Stamping is engine code, not all engines got a vin, I am more familiar with corvette codes, and someone with a book handy will probably do better but this is what I think your stamp breaks down to

V=Flint Michigan plant
04= 4th month April
I0= I think they used I in place of 1 to differentiate from L, so I think this is 10th day

WO is suffix for 283 manual trans, 2 bbl 175hp k10/k20 in 1967 (makes most sense for your truck, but is also a 307 in 1968, and 350 in 1969

If it still uses a canister type oil filter you can bet its an earlier 283, but it could easily had a spin on adapter added over the years

Re: 1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Glad to hear that Rob is going to be able to get your metal work done.

To change your 12 bolt to 3.07 gears, you will need a different carrier. I'm not sure on the Dana 44 but I don't think you'll need to change the carrier. The truck 12 bolt and Dana 44 gears are not interchangeable. I believe I do have a disc brake Dana 44 with 3.07 gears if you are interested.

Kool truck nice looking original good to see your using it, I've heard a lot of people over the yrs say that they enjoyed there trucks a lot before they restored them. And now there afraid of scratching them up. Of course I can't blame them after that especially with a wooden bed floor who would want to tear one up after it's nicely done...I'll be watching progress...

Re: 1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Thanks 61 K10.
Capn yes Robs friend did paint it, pretty happy with the results, but took a lot longer then originally anticipated.
Lots of work to do now, but it will be fun seeing it go together.
Working on the brake linkage for the power brakes will be the first project..

Re: 1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Just read your build, you are making good progress, very nice truck!
The GM Heritage Center-web site is very helpful and a good resource, in that it provides a lot original information / specification / options available. At the bottom of the home page you can follow link to car and truck information. It is also good to review information on other years, e.g ......1964, 1965, as these different year materials provide additional information, not repeated in all years. Ride height specifications for different spring options is an example, for condition empty and at max GVW. To get information on all options, it is good to look at different years.

Thanks for sharing you build, and as alway, everybody needs pictures of what is happening on your truck.

Re: 1966 K10 SWB Sepside Goldie

Ok I am working on the interior of my truck. A couple of coats of undercoating, some sound deadening material, from Home Depot, and the underlayment.
Now I am working on the vinyl floor mat from Stock Interiors and I am running into an issue on the fitment on the firewall above the hump. It is not fitting at all see pictures. Has anybody else had this issue..
