Re: 72 k20 project

thanks Pete!

Ryan, i think i will buy it. it just has to little damage not to. but i think i will just end up swapping the sides onto my steel floor. i can make the wood floor work, but im not sure its work the hassle. i need to unload the scrap on my trailer and get the cab to the blaster/bodyguy. then i can have some space to load up another bed... plus where its located in the guys field, i would much rather wait till its dry or really frozen to go get it.

Re: 72 k20 project

Oh man, go give the Jeep a work out! I opted to go steel floor in mine because I knew I'd be hauling 1100lb or heavier engines. A lot.

Re: 72 k20 project

i made the cab an a/c almost completely. i dont have a good template for the center vent, and no vent to work from either.

and the other side

i also got the firewall mostly cleaned up. i think its done out here. its not a show car type deal, but with the 12v in there youll never see it

i also spent some time measuring and postulating on the rear 4 link. i have a decent idea where i am going, but i need the bags first.

Lookin' good - I can trace out the center vent on mine and send it if that helps and you're in no big rush.

i wonder if that is the same as a OEM center vent? the hole is a little different.

anyhow, i have started designing the 4 link and i ordered a stick of 2" .250 wall DOM. i also got a stick of 1" .120 wall for some other stuff. now, i need to order the rod ends, but i have not fully decided what i am using. either way, thats gonna hurt. i think i decided what will work best for bags too, so ill need to order those...

Are you doing dodge coils up front?

Check out this build, he does coil over with three link I think. Its pretty badass but be warned he quits at the end. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/cu...ew-cab-66.html

Re: 72 k20 project

Big ol' bags and link rear. i hope to do the front some time in the future. right now i dont want to attack that too.

his looks cool, but, i didnt follow all the way to the end.

trying to decided if i want full rod ends, ballistic joints, EMF joints, rod ends and poly bushings, ballistic joints and poly... so many choices and i would prefer to do it once and not worry about it for a while. EMF joints are supposed to be king **** of turd Mt. but they are not cheap. a quick grand for just the joints. i dont really need tons of "twist" so im leaning towards poly on the frame end and ballistic joints at the axle. its hard to determine the best choice from all the banter on the web as to what is good and what is crap.

Are you planning on making the truck articulate like a rock lizard or something closer to stock for heavy towing?

Re: 72 k20 project

no real need for the super articulation. it wont even have the travel to accomplish that. i just want strong and durable. i dont care what people say about "road vibrations" it has a cummins on poly mounts, so im sure ill feel a few vibrations. biggest concern i have is the quickness of rod ends going to rattles. i run them on my steering religiously and dont have any issues, but ive never had them on a suspension. since it will be a parallel w/panhard, i dont want any binding from side to side to cause undue or early wear either. i'm sure i am worrying over nothing. i'm pretty sure i'll end up doing 1 1/4" rod ends or half and half with the ballistic poly ends on the frame. i will probably do poly on both sides of the panhard.

all this research has me convinced of one thing. when i link the rear of my jeep, i will be using the EMFs if i can afford them at the time. they are BA. plus it will be triangulated so i will only need to buy 8

Re: 72 k20 project

I just found your build, I haven't been real active on the board lately.

Looks like you are building one hell of a nice truck. There are getting to be a lot of us stuffing 12 valves in these things and I think it is a good thing.

I like what you did with your core support, I will probably be doing something similar with mine.

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks

i am happy with the core support. i think a lot of people thought i was Krazy at first, but in the end it is exactly what i wanted and its more sturdy than the original i think

i am excited to get this link/bag set up done. the weather here isnt cooperating with my attempts to get the cab blasted and to the painter, so i have some time to twiddle my thumbs and design...

Re: 72 k20 project

my eyes and fingers are bleeding. not done yet. provided my development is correct, all i have left to draw is the upper bag mount and the disks for the piston and bead plate. after all that, ill still have to do the panhard and shock mounts

I am running 2010 Mechanical, and it is freaking amazing. I absolutely love working with it.

What is the brand of plasma cutter you are using?

I have been eyeballing a torch mate for quite some time. As well I saw that Hypertherm is coming out with a Laser so I am going to be very interested to see how that works because it will mean being able to do engraving as well.

Ryan, Have you used Solidworks? I use it all the time for work projects. I love it for anything 3d. I assume the CNC equipment you work with can use one of the export options to work off of directly?

Recently I modeled some parts and send them to a CNC multiaxis mill and voila, a fully functional 3d part was made. Pretty cool stuff.

we were on 2010 at work until last year when they stepped up to 12 and then 13 with the full inventor suite. i really wish i had a newer program but i dont want to buy a newer 2d program for home without having a 3d program too. id love to get a 5-8 year old version of inventor as that is what i learned on and loved it. like i said, i may just go for it and buy the inventor 13lte program.

i cut all my stuff at work. we have a choice between a 6'x12' messer table and control with an HD 100a hypertherm and a 200a hypertherm powersource, or a 6'x12' Flow waterjet table. i havent learned the Flow yet, so i plasma most of my stuff. its faster anyhow for parts that dont particularly need perfect edges and +/- .001 tolerances. i have the settings dialed in for 7ga and .250" on the hypertherm anyhow.

i have been shopping the torchmate website too. i dont have much room at home so id really like the 2'x2' just to make my brackets at home and to play around. i know you can piggyback a scribe/engraver on most of the torchmate stuff, but laser engraving is really nice. lasers are huge power hogs though and require you have gas for them as well. for me at home i would go with a hypertherm 45 or 65 and a torchmate and be totally happy.

i have never worked in solidworks, but i have heard its pretty good to work with. i would like to try it out sometime but all of our stuff at work is autocad based and it is nice to have the easy compatibility. there is talk of a multiaxis mill coming to play at work, and i would love that ability. draw, push print, part made of metal. a buddy of mine is an instructor for the local comm. college machining course. hes the one who taught me how to be a hack machinist. some of the stuff he can make is pretty sweet.

our waterjet is pretty much a point and shoot affair with the inventor program. the Messer is old and isnt updated to newer versions because everyone knows how this one works. best not change or we'd have a meltdown of civility. i am sure it could be set up that way now, but it still uses the OLD SDS system to convert to cutpath.
