Help identifying my 700R4 tranny

I need help identifying a 700 R4 that’s already in my son’s 1968 C10.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, my son just bought this 1968 C10 fleet. We are 2nd owners on paper but a local guy had it for several months. He never put the title into his name but he did a great deal of work to the truck.
Right now the truck has a 0 mile rebuilt 350 SBC with a 700R4. The trans crossmember is merely a temporary support piece, so it’s not road worthy yet, but it does yard drive.
I’ve been reading about the TV cable and how important it is to have it adjusted properly. The guy who installed the engine and drive train had $100K worth of drag race cars in his shop but I’m not gonna assume he completed the installation and adjustments properly.

Can you help me identify the 700R4 and point me to good literature on how to get the TV cable adjusted? I sure don’t want to mess up a perfectly good tranny.

Re: Help identifying my 700R4 tranny

Thanks for the help!
Am I wrong to assume that all 700R4 transmissions are the same? I understand that there are 4X4 versions and 2WD versions, but are the internals basically the same?

When I asked my question in the first post, I was assuming that there were different models of 700R4 transmissions made over the years.

Rickysnickers, That article is really good and I feel confident that I can get the TV cable properly "set" once I have the tranny properly positioned. The 700R4 is presently only supported by a piece of flat bar steel which is not adequate. I'll order a nice support crossmember once I get the brakes finished.

Geezer#99, The link you shared is a great resorce too and I'll probably order an inspection cover from them. Thanks

1982-84 were small input shaft. Same size as the 200-4R. There might be some differences in torque converter clutch wiring. The input sprag was improved along the way.

1987-88 was a transition from Chevrolet design to a Hydramatic redesign with a forward clutch accumulator to cushion the shift from neutral to drive. The valve body changed some because all were computer TCC by then. They also changed the name to 4L60

All along the way were changes in clutch packs. Reverse input in the early models had a steel piston and the later aluminum. The 3-4 clutch line up seem to change almost yearly.

There were difference in the throttle boost valve and line bias valve depending what hp/torque engine was in front of it.

In 1993 trucks got the electronic shifting (4L60e) but the RWD cars still had the 4L60. This transmission had a round TCC connector on the left side of the transmission

Many people will say the 88 and newer are the only ones to use. But I don't have a problem with the earlier ones. Certainly nothing wrong with the 85-86 models.

Whats the code on the RR part of the case?
