Question Replacement Fuel Tanks?

Who has installed one of the steel replacement gas tanks that are sold by many vendors. My understanding is they are a direct fit if you swap the original filler pipe. Any first hand experiences you can share. My tank is solid on the outside but rusty as hell on the inside. I could acid dip it to clean out the rust but am thinking a new swap may be a better way to go.
Thanks for any insight.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks?

Jeff, as you said it is a direct replacement (tank). My problem was the neck was brazed on, making it difficult to remove. I ended up grinding it off (only the gold color, stopping when you see silver) leave the studs for alignment.I
used my Dremel w/ cut off wheel

I used a chisel, to start the cut on the old tank, and then finished up with tin snips

Then its just a matter of soldering the old neck to the new tank

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks?

Thanks. It is now looking like I will probably go this route. You mean the braze was on the new tank or the old original tank?
One other question. Is the new tank bare metal or is there a finish on it like galvanize or ?

Wishful thinking, just silver paint. Braze is on new tank, at least on mine it was....

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks?

My tank was galvanized but I would paint it or get it powder coated to make it last longer. Good luck with the filer tube is all I can say. The truck shop in Orange CA had the best price I could find on the tank kit. You will want to reuse your straps or find new ones if possible.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks?

With the filler neck swap, it was a direct fit.

The radiator shop I took it to for that didn't hiccup about the old tank having had gas in it, they just knocked it out. The only thing was, they couldn't dispose of the old tank so I had to take it with me. I wasn't sure how to dispose of it either, so I left it on the curb, thinking maybe it would get picked up on bulk trash day, but someone picked it up, probably for scrap metal, before bulk trash day came.

I just replaced my gas tank last summer. At the beginning of the thread, I made some incorrect assumptions regarding bolt placement, but I got some great info from the board, and a little trial and error along the way, and got it going.
