Sport Stearing Wheel
Acquired an original steering wheel today. But the surface feels like fly paper. So sticky it’s unbelievable. Any suggestions on what to use to remedy this? I rely on my favorite forum. Thanks Smitty.

I've had several steering wheels do the same thing... I don't think it's from some chemical getting on it.. It appears to be the result of deterioration or "aging process". I'm an Amateur Radio Operator and one of my handheld radios has the same condition..
I'm sorry to say I can't help you as I haven't found a permanent cure for the problem, everything I've tried is only temporary. The stickiness always returns. I'll be watching this thread to see what others have come up with. |

I’m guessing it’s a 69-72 wheel? The plastic they are made of, can get like that. Same goes for wheels produced for many years later. Clean it up as best you can, it should be use-able...

I have used GOO-Gone to remove the sticky residue, but like Rusty said it seems to come back. I think some of it is from the natural oil on your hands because it seems to be worse where you grip the wheel most of the time. I was going to try waxing one of mine after I cleaned it but I wasn't sure that would be a good idea. I painted the wheel in my '67 Panel Truck after I used the GOO-Gone. I used the plastic prep and painted it with the SEM paint for plastics and vinyl. It seems to be holding up pretty good..... LockDoc

Are you talking about the Sport Grip steering wheels that was an option in GM cars? I've wondered and have seen threads from time to time here asking the same question, and it doesn't seem there is a permanent solution. If there is, I hope someone will offer it up here

if you look at the last page on the craigslist the white GMC has a 3 spoke steering wheel
