portable sand blaster

Does anyone use a portable sand blaster? I'm wanting to blast my frame and then paint it and I'm wondering how well a portable sand blaster would work? Does rental companies rent an AC and blaster together? I'm blasting my 68 and someday when I get that done, I'll do my 68 IH so I plan on doing a lot of blasting.

I've done my own and hired it done....I can tell you from that experience you'll be ahead of the game just hiring it done...

Before blasting, visit your local car wash and presoak the engine area to get rid of as much grease as you can, then spray it off. Repeat as needed..

I have heard people on here talking about having their frame sandblasted and powder coated for a few hundred dollars not a fan of powder coating but it might be a good place to have it blasted. I blast all of my own stuff don’t trust someone else to do it especially sheet metal, the biggest thing with blasting is having a compressor that will keep up. Harbor freight sells a portable sandblaster. Gregg and Robert both have good suggestions.

I have blast cabinet from harbour freight and a portable pressure bottle from eastwood, both are fair....if your compressor is a decent size, just do small sections at a time after you pressure wash the whole thing. I found a bucket of sand/ or media works just about as good as anything.... with a 6 ft hose and a nozzle for the sand. Dry sand and dry air are important. Lay down a tarp and reuse the media, after sifting....respirator is required. ...If you have the local people that can do it reasonably, that would be best.

My father in law gave me a small blaster and I have been using it with decent results. I switched over to a media called Black Diamond which is coal slag and it seems to do a better job at lower pressure than sand.

I used this one from princess auto up here same as a harbour freight one I’m sure. I did my 65 frame with it and it took alot of hours never again and same with the coating/spraying. For smaller jobs I think it’s great I have a big compressor and it keeps up no problem. I had my wife’s 61 frame blasted and coated with endura this past winter for $1000 plus a bunch of box parts never again will I do all that dirty work and clean up etc. The last pic is her 61 frame. The guy had it blasted and coated in 2 days . I spent at least 5 good days blasting and then painting mine

5 days of my time is also a lot of $$ to me . Up here blasting and coating a frame with endura epoxy isnt cheap . The endura primer and base coat would be around $400 In material alone not to mention at least another $200 in sand , $100 in ceramic nozzles for blaster and shields for the hood another $100. For smaller parts and like my cab floor and some body parts it’s great. Took me maybe 2 hours to blast my floor up

Yes sir it’s a lot of work in the future get you a carbide nozzle you can do two or three complete cars with one, you can get screens that go in front of your lens to protect them from the sand recycle your sand it’s well worth it. don’t know anything about the epoxy you used I like SPI 200 bucks it makes 2 gallons. could not imagine doing that assembled that had to be time consuming. I am probably out of touch on cost never having someone else do it. Martinsr posted on here a few months back that he had his frame and a bunch of miscellaneous parts blasted and powder coated for a couple of hundred dollars at the time I thought that was extremely cheap but if the epoxy you’re using is $400 that’s 600 for labor to blast and paint Is a fair price. Also using recycled sand is much finer and does a better job on sheet metal and less chance of warping

I had 2 doors, 2 fenders, hood and bed media blasted for $750. Still have the cab to do but been doing that myself. I thought the price to do the blasting was worth it

I just went over a friends house to wire up a new compressor the other day he has one of those sandblasters that he is currently blasting a frame with,it a 1 ton truck frame and he going to spend quite a few days getting it done , he got a price for $600 from a guy, and will be done in 1 day , I personly rented a comercial tagalong crompressor and sand blaster from my local tool rental store for 160 a day, I got it done in one day ,I used about 12 bags of black diamond that was about 90.00 . it was a lot of work even with the commercial set up I rented for the day.
