I love a good junk yard hunt as much as the next guy, unfortunately there are no real old ones around here. Oh, they like to be called Automotive Dismantlers today...Even junk yards are PC now!

Good luck in your scrap yard hunting, just don't take that P/S changeover unless Smitty does not want it.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Sorry, but no junk stuff in my truck. Purchased a brand new box from a great outfit in Washington called Red Head. They shipped the unit in a well-packed box designed for me to return my old unit. The new steering gear box works smooth as butter.....so smooth in fact, that I may decide to add a damper to allow for more "road feel." I highly recommend Red Head. BTW, they paid for the return postage ($60 at UPS) and credited my card account for $150 for the returned core. Great company to do business with. They rebuild nothing but steering gear boxes and give advice over the phone.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Anyone use the CPP "500" series box? $375 without a core. It has a sexy billet cover on it also. I have used an Autozone rebuilt special in the past and it was very smooth but had zero road feel. I don't want that for my current build.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Not familiar with the CPP box, but feeling that a steering damper might give more road "feel," can anyone recommend a quality steering damper that will fit on a stock '67 front end? I have all the catalogs, but don't want to get stuck with something that doesn't work well from a company that is now well-regarded.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have a Moog SSD10 damper from Rock Auto on my '72. It was like $50 for it. If I remember correctly it will fit on a stock '67.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Get a box from a 78 c10 , its quicker ratio , and has valving to firm the wheel at center , or when going straight down the road , an excellent upgrade for almost $0 , if you don't trust a used box , get a rebuilt and turn your old box in for a core . make sure you have a sway bar up front also , many came without them

My understanding is the CPP box will fit without the spacer bracket. I would like to know for sure. Anybody used one?

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

The majority of 67s frames are not dimpled to fit the power , but some are , its and easy modification to heat and hammer , I would not use spacers

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

I used the cpp box. I do not recommend it. I used the spacers for my 67. I have a lot of hard spots while steering. Don’t waste your money. A believe a later square body box is the exact same thing.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

My 68, which was built in the fall of 67 was not dimpled from the factory. I had to dimple it to install a power steering box.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Bringing this back from the dead to ask: does anyone have a pic of the 67 frame before and after being dimpled?

I’ve got a ton of slop in my steering box and need to do something about it sooner than later.

Post #4 in this thread shows a '67 frame that is not dimpled and post #8 shows a later one that is.

The original poster in that thread used a new CPP steering box and evidently you don't have to dimple the frame with those.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

I bought a 1969 up C10 Saginaw power steering box, and hammered the frame between the bolt holes until the bolt flanges touched without the center of the box touching the frame.

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Before you decide on what you do, see how the one in your truck now is mounted.. chances are there are 1/4 inch spacers on each bolt. If so, more then likely they used a ps gear from a square body like most of us do. If you post a pic of what's in the truck now that would tell us wonders and give a better idea of what to purchase

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Thanks Leon. Appreciate the assist.

Here's the steering wheel play.

Steering box post to follow.

Also, I just realized I've got a 68 parts truck and the steering box seems pretty tight. I think I'm going to yank it, clean it up, then get it installed in my 67.

Thoughts?

Yeah, that looks like quite a bit. If it had the full size wheel on it it would be a LOT.....

No reason you couldn't use the '68 box. Just check the fit against the frame.

Didn't quite pickup on what was causing play. You know that there is an adjustment on top of the box that will reduce play?

I'm honestly not sure, but when you grab the coupler at the top (steering wheel. Side) and twist it, you can feel a ton of slop.

If there's an Adjuster, I'll definitely give it a try, but it's leaking power steering fluid form somewhere, so I've got to dig in anyway.

If you tighten it up too much, when you turn a corner you won't be able to straighten it up and you will drive through a fence and almost hit a tree... Ask me how I know..... (on second thought, don't)

All I know is you want to loosen the lock nut and only turn the adjusting screw about 1/8 of an inch at a time then re-tighten it and try it.... Also remember where you started. (mark it) Normal disclaimer applies. Do this at your own risk.

Advance auto . order online for the discount and use local pickup. as far as dimpling the frame it takes very little , I just made 2 relief cuts and used some heat to make it fit without beating up the frame and stitched welded it back . Don't use washers or spacers . the drivers side core support bracket needs to be clearanced some on the 67 frame for the steering gear to fit . use a new Lares 201 steering coupler , Double check the fit of the coupler at the store .

Re: Help! need steering box for '67 C10

Lockdoc was very correct in that you don't turn it much. I was adjusting box on daughters 03 Rubicon to reduce play. Loosened lock nut and figured righty tighty - gave it a turn and locked it down. Turned steering wheel to try and it went a good 90 degrees. Looked at output shaft and it had moved down out of box by noticing shiny shaft. I used crocus cloth to clean shaft so that when I turned adjustment to eliminated play it would go back up into box without messing up seal

Lares sales an all new, not rebuilt QR box. I bought one for my 67. The lares boxes were quite popular on a square body LS swap forum I'm on. The 67-72 P/N is Lares 11075 at Rock Auto. No core. $335
