Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

https://weather.com/safety/hurricane...outheast-coast

I really hate when hurricanes hit. Who is getting ready?

I am. I do all the shopping for my parents now so yesterday I really stocked up on canned goods and candles. Now that mom is completely bed fast, I am much more concerned about a power outage. I tried to talk dad into getting a generator but NOPE, he refused.

WV isn't in the kind of danger our east coast forum friends are but I do worry about losing power.

I hope this thing runs out of steam and that everyone fairs well.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Hurricane Sandy, though an exceptional and later storm, came up to NJ and hooked a hard left across southern PA, western MD, and northern WVA. It was October with all the leves still on the trees and it dropped wet heavy snow causing all sorts of powerline failures, like snapped off poles in long rows

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Since I am only about 30-40 miles from the coast and then have the Chesapeake Bay on the west side of me, I don't see a lot of choices if we were to take a direct hit. I will stock up on some non perishable stuff and hope for the best here. Leaving is not an option for me. I guess if it starts flooding we can all get in my panel truck on the lift for a while I have a welder generator on my crane truck that I have a patch cord made up for to plug into the house panel in case of outages and my pool holds about 13k gallons that can be used if needed (unless a tree falls across it)

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Richard, you seem to have some cool features in that house/garage of yours! Hope you don't need any come Thursday.

Just before Sandy hit, there were three days of hot temperatures predicted. I took the opportunity, went to Lowe's and bought a generous load of driveway sealer. It was a tough three day job and I wore one brush/squeegee down to the frame, but I got the entire driveway sealed.

The fourth day the temperature dropped down to the 50's and I was glad I was done.

The day after that, 3 feet of snow! Power was lost so I cleaned out the frig and put all that onto the back porch.

Since I had lost 25 pounds that fall and was used to 1.5 hour workouts each day, I quickly shoveled the driveway then my neighbors' driveway. It turned out for WV at least, to be an excellent season for skiing.

Can't say the same for where the liquid part of Sandy went....

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Growing up and living on the Gulf coast all my life and been thru many storms, including Camille and Katrina,I've learned to always be prepared for the worst!
I also have a whole house generator, stored supplies and a plan!
The one headed to you folks looks to be a bad one so please be careful and think of your life first.Everything else can be replaced.
Good luck!
Mike.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Baltimore here. Nothing special to prepare, always decently prepared with a generator, flash lights, jugs of water, canned goods, etc.

I need to talk to my uncle. He lives on Middle River. His house suffered heavy damage from Isabel back around '03. There was a standing 4' of water in hit yard.

I don't remember much from Sandy. The city was declared a state of emergency, so only emergency personnel could be on the road. At the time I was doing IT for Johns Hopkins and I was on call. Our department was closed, but many doctors worked remotely. A machine went down and I had to go in to bring it back up. It was cool driving through the city in the middle of the day and being the ONLY person on the road.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

I wasn't... but now it could hit us inland at a Category 1 still, so my ears are perked. My wife is picking up bottled water tonight. Flashlights are good. I haven't run my generator in years... might have to see if I can get it out and running.

I'm a civil engineer and was picky where I bought my house, we do get localized flooding in the upstate, but not much. My house is near a "local high point", 40' above the nearest creek and 100' above the river it flows into.

The wind concerns me. We have A LOT of our power system right next to large trees everywhere. When a storm like this hits, if power goes out isn't the question, how long it will be out is. The biggest thing that sucks this time of year is how warm it is still, at least in the winter I can use the gas fireplace. No way to cool down with hard wind and rain coming in windows.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Be careful with that old generator! Don't get electrocuted.

Good thinking settling down on the high ground. I grew up in a house by a creek, a tiny creek that became a raging torrent every spring and then became a wide river that flooded out the basement every year.

Flowing water is nice and a small creek is calming until the heavy rains come.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

SC, NC, and VA have issued states of emergency and SC and parts of NC have ordered coastal evacuations already.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

It is going to be bad for lots of folks. If you are in the path LEAVE. I live on the east coast of southern VA and getting ready. Everyone in North Carolina could be in the path depending on when it turns north and where it stalls out and sits. Those of us that remember hurricane Camille now what one of these storms dumping lots of rain can do in the western parts of Virginia. So everyone be prepared and stay safe.

Aside from the brutal wind, they are predicting rainfall on coastal NC at 30"! My heart sinks when I think of how the Outer Banks will fare. Just awful.

Two nights ago I watched a 1970-ish documentary on Camille. WHOA. One resident that had evacuated came back to find his house leveled. He told the reporter "I wish I had stayed and gone with the house." That's how depressed he was.

The video also covered the severe flooding and landslides in WV and VA. I am fearful of that now.

My brother lives near the coast in NC. He has been there since the early '90's and has never run from any hurricane. Usually he "rides it out drinking a 5th."

Dad asked him today "how high up his house sits?" "Three feet" was the answer.

Dad told him "you might end up on the 2nd floor."

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

It keeps tracking north, so my area will likely just get some wind and A LOT of rain.

SC reversed our highways today all the way to Columbia to get people out.

ASTAGA! (Indonesian for "holy crap!")

Counterflow? SC is doing counterflow on the interstates? That's a big deal.

It's not that huge of a deal, it's been done before, but yes, highway 26 East is shut down and all lanes go west.

If you are within 250 miles or more where this hits... keep in mind heavy rain for days, ground will be saturated and downed trees will take out power lines. Camping is ok if your prepared, after a week without power, the fun is over. Keep safe....ASTAGA...MY new favorite word.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

The weather report in Baltimore is saying it could waiver south, so it's all just talk now. There is a huge high also coming in from the west that we expect will hold the storm south of us, and also slow it's wind speed a good bit where it hits. In fact, Saturday may be really nice weather here. I take it all (predictions) with a grain of salt so many days ahead. But that's not to say I don't heed the warnings. We are not in a high impact area but I still have all my gutters clear, tidied up the property of things that can blow in gusty weather, and made sure things were covered well with tarps secure as can be. I always have food and water for at least a week on hand. Not to leave out the toilet paper (good for months ). We had more rain last weekend (4+") than they are predicting from Florence here. I am concerned for those in it's path. It's a big one.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

What a difference a day can make? All of a sudden it's going to turn and head right for us in the upstate

It should be pretty weak by the time it gets here, but there will be some serious rain and lots of wind.

Re: Ugh...are you getting ready for Florence?

Yeah. Looks like a good bit of rain, but I guess over a period of a couple days. I saw Augusta, GA 6.2" but who knows? We've been having localized flooding all summer around here and around the region. We had 6" or more overnight a month or so ago when I was at Carlisle Trucks. My gauge is 6" and it was brimmed out when I got home. Low Country will get hammered. I hope all will heed warnings and get somewhere safe.

It's going to tear up the coast from Cape Fear down most of South Carolina's coast before coming onto land.
