Began the painful process that is color sanding, you can actually see the difference on the bed side where I stopped. Using 3M trizac pads, 1000, 1500 2500, 3000, 5000, compound and polish.

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

What's that rope for you ask? .............I bet some people know exactly what that damn thing is for. Let me tell you about putting in a windshield, there are youtube videos online that are full of magic and lies.

1. They do it without swearing, which is impossible
2. They do it without sweating, also impossible
3. They get it on the first try, BS
4. They hardly smack the glass, hose it with water and soap, throw plastic seal hooks, or any childish things that it actually takes to put a windshield in a 67-72 pickup
5. My personal favorite is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2Xg30Q39Cw

These guys are full of crap, the video is 4 and a half minutes long and they skip all of the horrible awkward parts of the installation where you straddle the air cleaner and swear at your old man to get his a** in gear before you drop the windshield.

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

I think one of the more enjoyable fixes I've completed was new hood hinges, this thing opens beautifully now. Here are the pictures of the hood on, glass in, and some slow assembly.

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

Did my windshield that same exact way! My dad and I used an old electrical extension cord, and you basically described the process down to a "T" haha

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

Are you still in MN?! I moved here from AZ 25 years ago. Drove the 68 here about 15 years ago. WHAT A RIDE!? NO: air, radio, fuel gauge, insulation. LONG ride! Gonna get some things done this year.... LOVE your truck. Always loved that green. That would be my color of choice if this were not already blue and white and my son wants me to keep it this way.

Yes, I'm still in Minnesota. I can't get enough of the medium olive white combo. Hah, God willing no more cross country trips.

Very nice truck and the whole thread/story is way cool too.
Love the color. Bet that truck is a head turner and a thumbs up getter.

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

Congrats on the build. I also live in Minneapolis so I can relate with having to prep/paint in the garage. Huge pain. The story of your resto process was oddly similiar to mine right down to having my girlfriend (now fiance) stain the bed wood with me. I also got many complaints about "chemical smells" when I painted it in the garage. Take a look through my thread (post #146) and you will probably see a very similar garage paint setup haha. Must be that engineer mindset that we share haha

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

Nitis:
I'm planning on just driving it and doing the interior (as we speak). I have a saddle seat cover coming with light brown carpet. I'm planning on being in Minden again later this year, I love it out there (well I love mountains).

nuke1:
I'm actually from up near your neck of the woods (northern North Dakota) and also have a 69 camaro although not in the kind of shape as yours. It's my next project.

Xludan:
Haaaaaaaaa, my wife is always giving me "the look" when I come in. Whether it's the 'you smell' look or the 'why are you covered in green dust' look. I'll check out the thread asap.

Re: 1971 GMC Cross Country Hauler

HA! I think my wife looks at the truck and my camaro with a measure of disdain because she has projects in mind for my time.
