Re: It's 383 time!!!!!

The rods are 5.7".

The headers aren't 3/4 car headers, they're full length headers specifically for these trucks made by Wysco.

Re: It's 383 time!!!!!

oh I remember someone on here going to build a motor and bought stainless headers from them, and they would fit 78-87 g bodys or somewhere in thoose lines also.

Regardless I want to get me some of thoose.

Wysco makes good stuff I have a heartbeat air cleaner from them and love it.

Very nice and thanks for showing the build. If it doesn't work out,I've got a '69 that has a '85 motor and it would only made sense to swap the two.

I know this is an old thread..just came across it in your sig. Are you still running that bad A** engine? It sounds amazing on the vid. Did you build the gage set? I love that too. That is one sweet ride!

Re: It's 383 time!!!!!

lol, yessir still driving it every day! Got about 25k miles on it. Have been through a set of tires, broken the transmission twice and killed a locker rear end since the motor went in. Have gotten as good as 17.5mpg on a road trip and usually average between 15-16mpg for daily use. The gauges are autometer pro-comps mounted in the factory cluster, pretty easy to do. Thanks for the compliments!

Maybe when I get my son a later model driver I will take his 86 and beef up the 5.7 we just put into it. We still lack a few minor things to make it road worthy. Man these are fun trucks to drive. I had a 77 step side for about 5 years. Way more fun than my daily driver I have now (a 99 grand am)pssst don't tell anyone it gets 26 mpg

I've never put it on a dyno, but on paper it should be somewhere between 450-475hp and 475-500ft lbs.

I shift it at 6000rpm, it starts to nose over just above that.

Thanks! No major updates really, just driving it! Motor has almost 40k miles on it now, and I drive it every single day. I've blown up the muncie trans twice and destroyed 2 eaton lockers since putting the 383 in. I've got the stock open rear carrier back in it now until I can get a good clutch style posi for it. I haven't taken it to the track since it's my daily driver and I've already got a track toy (camaro in sig). I hope to get something like a TKO 5 speed and a good posi in it someday....once that happens I'll have a tough enough drivetrain that isn't so prone to scattering parts everywhere, then I'll be more inclined to take it down the track. Based on the few "spirited encounters" I've had on the streets, I'd say it's in the low 13 / high 12 sec range if it hooks.

It generally gets between 14-16mpg mixed daily driving if I keep my foot out of it. I can pull 17 on a pure highway trip if I keep it 65 or below...buuuut that rarely happens.

My truck has been removed from daily driving duty for almost an entire year now. Got a company vehicle last march that I get to drive home, so I rarely drive the ol' girl anymore and it just sits outside. We're building a new house (and 1200sq ft garage for me!) this spring, so the truck will finally have an indoor home! She'll get some more attention then. Maybe a t56 & 4.10s....maybe some nitrous........who knows!

I believe that's a Fel Pro One Piece. Probably FEL-1880?

Great Build btw!

What's your experience with Edelbrock Air Gap intakes? I've heard they are hard to start and stay cold in the winter months.

It was a FEL-1885 if I remember correctly. Make sure you get the correct gasket for the pan you're running, mine called for a thin front seal which isn't as common as the thicker seal. Measure to be sure!

In my experience, the Air Gap intake not working well in cold climates is an internet myth. I daily drove this thing in temps WELL below zero. One pump of the throttle, set the choke and it fired right up with a bump of the key and it was up to operating temp (and stayed there) after 2-3 miles. I even have a plastic carb spacer to keep the fuel bowls cool and still never had any cold weather problems.

Never have taken it, but I'll do it some day. It's just been sitting for the last year or so and that likely won't change until next winter. I'll then have a permanent garage stall for it and can make some improvements to the driveline to make it track worthy. As it sits now, I'd have to drag a big magnet behind it to catch the tranny & rearend shrapnel.
