Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

I thought that since the top was white I would be able to get away with not painting it but it looked bad to me after the bottom was painted so sanded it and put a fresh coat of Flat White paint on the roof. The hardest part to me was getting the line from white to blue good and straight.

Here is the photos from yesterdays work. My daughter even got in on the help.....my son was too busy riding four wheelers with his friend. I had fun working with her though.

Ahhh.....that fresh white sure does look better to me.

I have to say...... I know that I am not a painter and someone could walk up to this truck and nit pick its paint job to death but it has been a great learning experience for me and I get great satisfaction in knowing that the kids have been getting in on it and the fact that we are doing it ourselves.

It has been fun spending some time with the kids on this project and also the father in law. Oh yeah.......and I don't have a ton of money tied up in the paint. Just a lot of time and fun.

Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

The new C10 badges came in. My originals were chrome background with a red "10" . The new ones have a chrome "10" and red background. Which way were correct? The originals could possibly have been repainted or something so I was just curious.

Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

Next, I have been working on the wood for the bed. I decided to buy some wood from Home Depot and do it ourselves. Was going to make the metal out of flatbar but for the price I just went ahead and ordered the metal kit and bolt kit. I'm glad I did.

At this time I am still trying to make up my mind on if I want to use the Clear Polyurethane

or the slightly darker Pecan Stain with Polyurethane.

The darker is not really as dark as it appears in the pic. Its still a pretty light color. I am leaning more towards that but have not made up my mind just yet.

Still have to take it all back apart and seal the wood and then put it all back together again.

Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

In between finishing up the wood in the bed I will be trying to get the motor ready to go to the engine shop. Hopefully that will go well.

Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

Well after realizing that I ordered the steel strips instead of the stainless I realized that I would have to paint my strips to keep them from rusting. I was going to go with a slightly darker "pecan" stain on the bed wood but with them being painted I liked the lighter wood so I went with a clear.

I had never done anything like this before and I know buying the kit may have been easier but this way was a lot cheaper and I do take some satisfaction in knowing that we did this all ourselves.

That said......glad to be done with the bed. That is a crap load of bolts to put in. I still have to do the bed to frame bolts and the very front row of bolts but other than that its done.

No, I guess not. Im glad I did mine off the truck though. We did my father in law's while the bed was on and it was much harder to get to everything and some we could not get too.

Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

Still have to bolt the bed down but we got it sitting on the frame so I snapped a few pics. This is the first time the truck has been somewhat together since the paint job. Just have to do the final fitments bolt down. Keep in mind that the bed still needs to be moved forward some and placed in the correct location. We just sat it on there to get it facing the right way in the shop. We took it apart with the nose facing inward and we ended up trapping the truck in the shop when we took everything apart. We cleaned up a little and got the truck facing the correct way so we could finish working on the bed using the lift and still get the rest of the truck in and out of the shop, if that makes any sense to yall.

Also, painted up the grille today so I can start getting it ready to go back on the truck.

The grille is not perfect and eventually I would like to go to an alum or chrome grill and bumpers but it will do for now.

Re: Our 1965 C10 Project

Got the bed back on and bolted down, finally.

Here are a few photos after we put it back on. With the 2.5 drop in the front and what we dropped it in the rear I am going to need some new tires that are not as wide. The clearance in the rear is only about an inch and I sure don't want to tear anything up. Maybe I can run up on some cheap rims and tires that fit the truck and look decent.

Hopefully soon I can order the headlight adjustment hardware and put my lights back in the grille.

Here it is with my father in law's truck.

Dusty and in the shadows and not the best photo but my littlest man wanted a photo with "daddy's truck"
