the mustang II is a poor excuse for a mustang.....I never liked those... like how you called it the non-mustang mustang.I have a 67 mustang coupe in my barn that used to be my wife's daily driver we bought it in 83 from my uncle then we had kids and bought a suburban, the mustang has been sitting ever since, for over 25 years...needs paint and interior, but is a nice car and worth fixing up....

A few weeks ago I went to Las Vegas, for work. I don't really gamble so it's not my first choice for fun. I stayed at a new hotel called the Lucky Dragon. It's nice, very asian. The windows are purple...

Once my work stuff was completed I managed to take a day and a half off while I was there. I rented a car and the first stop was...






Inside is a gift shop (of course) and a smallish car collection but one I won't soon forget.

BTW, you can still buy these cars through Shelby American. I know how they feel about the factory Five roadsters and other knock offs, but I can't afford the real deal. It's also possible the replica is a better performing car with the updates made over the years. But if you have deep pockets with gold bars clanking against each other in those pockets then I congratulate you. The price? About $93,000 for the fiberglass version (not including the drivetrain) and $163,000 for the hand formed aluminum body version, again without the drivetrain. Knowing that they are still being built was good enough for me.

This is the very first one built, using the AC body as it was at the time. When you see it next to the later production version you see the obvious changes made. It became more muscular. More badass.




























I have considered building one of these also. Sourcing the transaxle is only somewhat difficult. They are available but it's not real easy or cheap.

Thanks for taking the time to share these pics. I'd really like to get out to the Shelby museum. That is so awesome. I've thought long and hard about if or when I get a shelby kit car..... I think it would be awesome to have it wrapped to look like a polished bare aluminum body. Those GT cars are so rad too!

So, continuing on with my time in Vegas, the next morning I got up early to head to the Grand Canyon. Never been there before. Saw some cool stuff along the way though.

The pics here are dark, I know. It was very early. Sorry. This is a specialty used car lot in Boulder City.

A few miles further along is Hoover Dam. I did the tour here about 10 years ago. They have changed the roads completely since then. The construction for the new bridge was going on the last time I was here. I didn't do a tour this time and it was kind of surreal being there with hardly nobody else around. I saw one small tour guy hauling a family around in a Hummer and one other car the whole time I was there.

It's a working hydro-electric plant.

Morning in the desert is awesome. I know how people get used to where they are living and the scenery is just background for them, but I really appreciate being able to see this stuff as an outsider. After a while it is just dirt and rocks and not a lot else, but I love it. For those of you looking at these pics that have never been to the southwest, welcome to AZ.

Hours later I finally got to the big hole in the ground park. I won't bore you with all the pics I took but enough for you to get the idea of what it's like. It is a beautiful place. I wish I had the time to explore down there. Maybe some other day, if I'm lucky.










I went for a short hike out to the end of this point...
















After a few hours of staring into the big hole I needed to hit the road again and head back. My ex-in-laws live in Boulder City in the winters and asked me to dinner. Did you know that the Grand Canyon is just a short drive off from Route 66?


So I got my kicks and took it back towards Vegas most of the way. I had mixed feelings along the way. Much of it is just open land without much on it. There are some small towns and each one had some businesses capitalizing on the nostalgia of the highway. But most of what I saw was abandoned business in dilapidated towns similar to what I see all over the country. The cities grow, the small towns die, life moves on. As I got further west the scenery changed and was incredible in some places.














All along the route are a series of signs with a short slogan, usually relating to driving safe with some pun or humor to them. They were an advertising idea for Burma Shave. Nostalgia...


I wasn't hungry...

That about covers my trip to Vegas. I flew home, got some things done, then flew out to Seattle for most of a week. More to come.

That sure is some amazing country out there. We're going to take the kids there before they are in their teens. It's something I think they need to see to get a grasp of how large and beautiful it is. Hopefully the Dam is still operational then and there is water there.

Once home it was back to my normal thing, working on the house and trucks. I was looking for brackets to hold a 73 style grill in my 79 crew cab. I finally found a donor then found out that the brackets are not a bolt on part but a piece of the radiator support. Sure it could be removed if you have the right tools and the support is out of the truck, but I think I'll come up with something else. The Windom junkyard has this truck in it, but it's not for parts, he uses it.


This K5 is down the alley and has been sitting in the weeds for many years. Not much usable left on it, but I might go back for those hubcaps.




Any guesses what this contraption is?

I've driven by this place dozens of times. Earlier this spring he must of got a wild hair up his ... and a brush cutter and knocked down some of the over growth around his place. Parts hauler...

As stated in the previous post, I went back to Seattle. Had to spend some time with the local inspectors and attend the state boiler inspector meeting. Since I've got friends and family there I took a couple days off in the area for some exploring and visiting.


I stayed with my cousin again. He's an engineer and a gear head, but not as dedicated to the gear head life as me or many others I know. Smart guy though. He sold most of his fun stuff but kept this go cart. He likes to do some racing, and says these things are one of the funnest and most economical ways to get into it.


Some of his neighbors junk. Hot rod lincoln? Probably not what the writers of that song had in mind..


This though, this I like. Love that grill...


Nice square burb. Tons of these things around the area.


Saw this whilst looking for a refreshing beverage. I didn't buy it but did order it at a restaurant later. Pretty good stuff.


The next morning I needed something to do, a place to explore. I talked my cousin into riding along for the day. Here's the route. I've been to Leavenworth before. I think they call it the Bavaria of the cascades or something like that. Mostly I just wanted to get in the mountains and enjoy the scenery. My old territory covered the western end of Hwy 2 and I've been across most of the passes in NW WA. But it's been a long time, like since 2000.


We came across a nice assortment of old iron along I-90 going towards Cle Elum.

We walked around town, had a beer and a brat, then hit the road again. Little Bavaria...






As you head west in the cascades it goes from a very dry climate to a very wet one. If you live in western WA you gotta love liquid sunshine because that's mostly what you'll get.




Moss, moss and more moss. Moss grows on the north side of the trees they said, dammit which way are we going?




The trees seem to grow well around here...


I can't remember for sure where this was but it was around the Gold Bar area I think. Very interesting hunk of machinery, or contraption ;-)










Another cool brand, this one I didn't try, but cider is cider, most of them all taste the same.


I met up with an old neighbor of mine, met his fiance and got wrangled into taking a walk around Everett so she could get her exercise and get her future husbands lungs pumping. Saw a couple squares along the way...


This one looks just like my plow truck.


I like the Ivars restaurants in the area. A good alternative to burgers once in a while. One of the decorations...


That's it for today. The next batch is from the museum of flight. That's where one day of the meeting was held. Seen it before many years ago but it's changed, for the better. Lots of cool stuff there.

My guess is a Covair van motor. The firing order gve it away, not to mention the odd design.

Handed out some Irish Death to my boys stepbrother while in Oregon river rafting. He was cracking up reading the can. Pretty funny.

Not a big cider fan, but I actually like the 509 beer they have the best. Hard to find in the Tacoma area, so my wife talks me into going to Ellensburg and stop by the brewery for a 509. I'm in! Drive to Ellensburg not next door or anything.

Then I went home again, for a while. It's been a while since I checked out the junk hiding behind a transmission shop in town. Last time I did I was only looking for 67-72 stuff, but now I've got a couple squares too and there is more of that back there than I expected.










This one is just here because of how nasty it looks. Seems to have been there awhile. Imagine getting it on the road and keeping the green scum on it.


Here's a couple I came across in New Ulm...








I went down to Iowa to do a couple boiler inspections. This one is idling on one of the burners. The 2 burners on the left are not actually running, those are the pilot lights.


That's it for today. The next batch will show you how an air compressor tank is made. I had to cover for another inspector in a shop that makes them. I used to be the inspector for this shop back in 2001-03. Boring job, but the hours were good and the pay wasn't bad either. Don't miss it though.
