My "old Harley"

Just tossing out old cd's and saving a few pictures off of them before they hit the trash. Found some pics of my 02 Road King Classic. I know the boom cans aren't for everyone, but I liked them at the time. Future plans were to lower it, just never got around to it. Took a few road trips on it by myself. Longest one was over 7000 miles. Took it in a total of 42 states when you add up all my road trips. Got to where I was hardly ever riding it. The drivers around here started making it scary instead of pleasurable to ride so I let it go. I only miss riding when its a nice warm sunny summer day. Or in the fall when it smells so good. Or the spring is nice too

Was that a dummy pipe on the rear head? Nice color, never seen that, pre 08 looking at the front calipers.

That she did. And she wasn't a garage queen, or a sunny day only around town queen. Im pretty sure most Harley owners cant say they have driven their bikes west coast to east coast and from the north coast to (almost lol) the south coast of the good ol US of A, and darn close to every state in between.

Went through a lot of Comet keeping those white walls clean (more than one set) Never once trailered her anywhere.

I rode my '90 FLST all over and kept it spic & span for years as well. Dirt never lived long on that bike. Not so much now, but not bad for 28 years. I had Paughco true duals for a while in the '90s



I took a lot of the accessories off and rode it stripped pretty bare after that



I got tired (and broke) with new custom paint every time something happened to a piece and went with black

I didn’t care for flames prior to “Sketchy Deal” but those flames made me a believer. Now I’m to the point with the bike that I like the flames on the tank but not on the bags and side covers. Your scooter is more to my liking. Funny how old photos can bring things out about who you were/are. I know you got some good stories/memories riding that machine with the wind in your face.

Question for you guys with the King Classic. I always had bikes in my 20's but nothing over a small 550. Years later (25-30) I would really like a large bike that could be ridden long distances.
About 8-10 years ago my lower back was surgically fused and an after effect is I lack much agility and balance without being to twist that part of my body. On a big bike like that do I need it or do they handle much nicer than the small bikes? I had never rode a large bike even back in the day.

I could not ride long distances with the original seat on my road king. I would have to get off of it every 20-30 miles. I swapped it out with a Sundowner seat and can now ride a whole tank of gas. The back rest also does wonders. I am also thinking about putting taller handlebars on it as well to allow me to sit up straighter. Don't want ape hangers but 6" taller would do wonders for me

I had my seat rebuilt by an upholstery shop that does a lot of custom bike seats. I really liked my stock seat in the overall look for the bike I was going for, but like has been said it wasn't that great for long rides. So it was reshaped a bit and had a special gel pad installed. Add a seat back, or a traveling bag in my case for leaning on and you are all set.

My son has a model like Rocknrod and recently put a set of apes on like the ones mentioned and he said it makes a huge difference on his arm, wrist, and hand comfort for the better.

Lastly on street riding. I started with a very small Honda and worked my way up through the CC ranks. I was never a hot rod around bike guy so the progression to a large comfortable Harley worked perfectly for me. And on a personal level I avoided all the over the top Harley logo apparel. The only Harley t-shirts I wore had to come from dealerships I had stopped in all around the country. Used to have a really big collection. I'm down to one I got in Eerie Pennsylvania.

I'd say good legs and upper body/am strength are most important in holding one up, which is easy straight up, and bringing back when they start to go over. It's side to side.

Same here, have L-4-5 ,L5-S-1, fused, been riding 40 years,hands down Electra glide models are the best,rode a Softail for about 5 years,drove a Electraglide and never went back, love my FLHTC,but might go with a FLHX in the future.

Exactly. I started on a Kawi 250 years and years ago. When I did finally got a softail I thought i was done. Then I rode the Streetglide for 5 years, when I tried a softail again I was not happy.

Softail is a compromise innovation to gain the look. It really is somewhere between a hardtail and good suspension. But that's why I like mine. The bike has a primitive nature to it. Interesting how shocks extend to compress suspension and extend to compress it.

Nice looking CG. Those pipes are something else! Never seen megaphones like that around here. They sure are cool looking though. Im guessing they're pretty loud but you've put a lot of miles on 'em so they can't be that bad when you're riding?

Ive only ever known open drags or thunderheaders (but then again Ive only had Shovels and Pans). Would really like to get a newer "Glide" of some sort. Street or Road. The older swing arm bikes and even the Softails really work over my already worked over joints these days. Not ready to hang it all up yet though.

Heres my '77 FLHP bar hopper from back in the day. Jockey shifted stroker. Still have her and can't think to part with her although I know its coming soon. She's a young man's bike. Maybe the boy will take an interest?
