These LS pans are ummm let's just say pretty stout

Reason I figure 14" is that seems to be about the standard. Never run a vacuum pump before, so not too sure what to expect.

Nice build! How did you mount the seats? Did you go straight to the floor pan or build a floor hoop or connection to the roll cage? If you connected them tho the cage, can you show us pictures?

Not connected to the cage. I built mounts out of 1 1/2" x 2" square tube welded to the floor.



Last night I tore the motor completely down. While putting pins in the heads to align the intake for the porter, I did not relize the holes in the heads where the intake bolts come in are drilled/tapped all the way through. When I pulled the heads off, I found alum shavings in my lifter area and on the cam. some also fell in to the cyl's as the heads came off. Figured it would be a good idea to tear it completely down:
Tank the block
Pull the lifters apart and wash them out completely
Pull the rings off the pistons and clean the pistons
Clean off the cam

All the bearings look pretty good. So that makes me feel happy


Half tempted to sell my PRC 237 heads since I was going to have new valves/guides put in and buy some aftermarket casting LS7 heads. They flow about 15% more air across the full lift. Hmmm, head flow = power. But at what cost.

New intake
Need offset rockers (just bought 1.8 rollers for the current heads)
Might also require different fuel rails/adapters for my current injectors.

Tempted to put a different set of rings in it being there will be a vacuum pump moving forward. I'll call Weisco on Monday.

In the meantime:
EWP is back from Mezeire.
1.8 Yella Terra's are here.
Heads got shipped off to TEA yesterday. Debating on milling them vs running a thinner gasket. Guides were definately shot. I bought the heads used and should have checked them before installing them on the motor.
Started mocking up the vacuum pump yeasterday.

That cam you have in it, is it the same one you started with in the beginning of your build thread? Do you have any pictures of the engine compartment the way it is now or has nothing really changed since the beginning.

I have had:
4 different cams
4 different sets of heads
2 different short blocks
2 intakes
2 different throttle bodies
3 different N20 kits
2 water pumps
1 less power steering pump
7 different front springs
2 different tran (but both out several times)
4 different converters

The list goes on and on...


If I took a pic of the engine bay for you now, it would be empty motor has been out a half a dozen times too.

Heads are back. Intake valves weigh 87g. Time to drop the block, heads, and intake off so the valves can be unshrouded and the intake ported. Then back together it all goes!

But we just bought a house and a tractor. That could equal more time away from the truck.

Ultra light, extra high doller intake valves....... rockers made out of un-obtanium to keep them as light as science will allow,,, all to compensate for and attempt to control this big ol heavy overweight lifter.

It's ok Marv.. Food for thought and our discussion.. Head work done at a reasonable cost of <$1,000 included

New LS3 sodium filled valves turned down from 2.165 to 2.10
Wore out bronze guides removed and new powdered metal guides installed. Requires cnc to cut the PM guides
Valve job and combustion chamber clean up from valve job
Shipping to my door.

Seems very reasonable to me. Heck a ti valve alone would cost me 2.5x what I just spent, and... They weigh a whopping 1g less


Btw, since you brought up the heavy Hyd lifter.. I thought I would share the following links with you. This heavy lifter is going all the way to 8,300rpm on the 1-2 shift and 7,600-7,800 on the 2-3 shift. Check out both links and the videos on YouTube (you will find links in the threads).

OK so apples to apples,, (and I know valve control and lifter control are only 'related' not the same thing but one compliments the other) BUT: Apples to apples what does a hydraulic roller weigh compares to a Morel solid.

You are so far from a daily driver now that 'maintenance' isn't a valid argument... Hell you tear it apart and change things more than you drive it,, Whats a little valve adjustment (really LMAO on that one buddy) . That must be a California thing. You and that silly a$$ Bob Wu-10 LOL,, can't just put it together and run it.. Nooooo gotta tear it apart and 'tinker' with it.

Sounds like it is about to go back together . I am also a hydraulic roller user . Keep us posted on how it is going .


If i build a new motor it will likely be solid roller .

Ok.. Just for you Marv

Weighed 4 hyd rollers, all still have some oil in them, how much, who knows. 127-129g
Crane SR that I have on the shelf, weighed 2 of them.. both weigh 127g
5/16 7.4" .080 push rod 52g
The push rod i might run (just got one in) 3/8 .080 with 5/16 tips is at 72g

The new Yella Terra rock is heavier over the nose than the stock rocker, but I don't have a good way to show the difference. Keep in mind, I am running a stiffer spring moving forward

Now, why HYD vs Solid? The cost!! Plus it will be more fun to show that a hyd pump gas motor can go in the 9's in my truck on motor Once I do that, well... God only knows.

Nothing wrong with hyd lifters they can go much further than most think.. I do agree with light valve train.. then add you high flow heads LOL.. Its not my money I am spending so I say go for it.. Your other projects are sitting there I plan on getting out to the 1/8 track here.. the new 35 spline moser 9 inch is in and thus far is working flawless. Going to swap up to a 315 17 dot stickie and drop the hammer.
