Stainless W/S Trim Restoration

So I'm getting ready to do the windshield install on my truck and have read all of the horror stories about the aftermarket trim...

I'm using Precision gaskets which get good reviews from all y'all.

So I'm trying to obtain a set from a 67-70 truck and have dents removed and restored/polished. I can do the polishing but don't have the ability to tap out the minor dent/dings. A while back I remember reading that one of our forum members does this. Of course I can't remember who now...

Can anyone jog this old man's memory?

TIA,
Randy

Was that the guy in AZ, that had stainless trim for sale but he also restored it.?..I also used a Precision gasket, good fit....the shallow trim is a pita, would not stay in the groove.

Re: Stainless W/S Trim Restoration

67-70 trim + Counterparts 'Super Seal' gasket worked out a lot better for me.

I've done several sets and working on my buddy's 71 Monte Carlo right now. It's not that hard just time consuming.

Once you find some decent trim, I think you should try to remove any dents/dings yourself. I had never worked on stainless trim before restoring my set, but it all turned out really nice. As mentioned, it does take a considerable amount of time to work out the dings, file, sand, polish etc. I made some little wood pucks with various shapes to help. Just go slow. I used a sharpie to color in the face of the trim, then lightly block sand to determine the highs and lows. I learned a valuable lesson when polishing my rear window trim. I had spent hours straightening and polishing all my trim and I was on the last piece when I got complacent and the radius portion of the trim got caught under the buffing wheel and got sucked in. Kinked and scratched the hell out of the piece I was working on. I thought it was trash. My stomach sank and I immediately felt sick to my stomach. At this point, I didn't believe I had the skill set required to repair such damage and I knew I should of called it a day before tackling that last piece, but I didn't, and I paid the price. I've attached a few pics of the trim I'm referring to. To my surprise, I was able to fix the kinked up piece by slowly working it back into shape, tapping out the dents, lightly filing any high spots, sanding, repeat, repeat, and then started the polishing all over again. Crazy amount of work, but worth it in the end. I also, straightened and polished out my hubcaps as well... probably had 40hrs in just the four caps after metal working, polishing and painting.

Before, during and after of the trim...
