New to me 72 GMC 3/4 4x4 Suburban

Hello. I picked this up from another member a couple of weeks ago. I'm planning to go all stock with the exception of a lift and maybe tire rack/hidden winch. So far ive gathered the 36" tires on it with accurides, and a rust free core support. Its a rough old girl, but much less rust than others Ive found around here. I just pressure washed it inside and out today.

Re: New to me 72 GMC 3/4 4x4 Suburban

Chris, Thank you. I may have questions to ask along the way. I'm mostly really curious about the paint color. I cant find it as a 72 option. Really light blue. Have you seen it on a 67-72 before? I think ive seen some 67-68s. I know I can have it matched. But not having the official name for the blue is driving me nuts. I'd love to find a fender and hood that matches for now. Even if shipping ate me alive. Only cancer Ive found is the skin on drivers door. The rest is surface rust so far.

I would think you could figure out what the original color was from the paint code on the SPID. I don't remember where you look it up on here though.

Yeah. I posted it. Its a 4001CB. So a two tone, but Tim on the trucks forum side said its a special order and could be from any 1972 or earlier GM product I believe. He asked if I posted it on this side. Maybe I should start a new thread?

No problem posting it in this thread. You might want to post something in the "Paint & Bodywork" forum though. Those guys are pretty sharp over there....

Re: New to me 72 GMC 3/4 4x4 Suburban

Lockdoc, thats a great idea. Thank you. The tires are 36x12.5 16s on 16x7 accurides. Suspension is stock HD option. It clears by maybe an inch sitting still, but does clear with wheels turned (being pulled). The burb is not a runner at the moment. Before I put in a new engine I need to lift it a bit or they will rub easily. I do think the offset works well though. I like the look. Stole it from special-k's old trucks.

Your Suburban has 'special paint", not a production color found on the charts. Basically, it's s COPO order. I'd imagine it was either a municipality of some sort, but who knows? I like that it's a GMC on top of being a 3/4t

Re: New to me 72 GMC 3/4 4x4 Suburban

Thank you for the bump. Well, I picked up a 402 BBC thats going to the machine shop this next week after the engine kit shows up. Its currently stripped and ready to go. The block had never been rebuilt, and the ridges werent too bad. Doesnt need decked or anything crazy. Pretty nice block. Were going to punch it 30 over and do an Edelbrock performer cam, intake, valve spring combo with the engine kit. I'm in the middle of dropping the fuel tank. The front clip is off. I need to pull the 350, th350, and 205 out. Im on the hunt for a th400 and 32 spline np205 for it. Lots to do!

LockDoc, Thank you. Bgrdmoose (Zack) says you did a great job with his locks. Your highly recommended around here. I'm not sure what your service costs but I'll send you mine when we get closer. I'm waiting for pistons right now before the machine shop. If im driving it in 6 months I'll be thrilled.

Re: New to me 72 GMC 3/4 4x4 Suburban

I got the 402 block and heads back from the machine shop. Bored .30 over KB pistons, rv cam etc. Should be around 350hp and im hoping for 400-450bs of torque. Should be a good reliable towing/truck engine. Im short on time at the moment but looking forward to working on it. I also bought a new piece of glass for the back, sold the off road roof rack and bought some vintage style clamps from nrs. I'm hunting down a th400 an np205 for it at the moment.
