WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

I stumbled across a very nice 72 1 ton truck today with NO rust ,nice white paint ,just needs a good cleaning ,4 speed ,350 engine ,nice gooseneck flatbed just needs paint freshened up ,receiver hitch ,trailer brake controller ,AM radio ,and the best part it has very nicely restored BuddyBuckets ,believed to only have 66,000 original miles .It has the fake chrome wheel covers front and rear(dually),chrome front bumper w/bumper guards ,power steering and brakes ,runs and drives great .It would be a perfect daily driver for me and my wife is onboard if my insurance company will cover it .What do ya'll think its worth without pics ,didnt have a camera as I didnt know it even existed ? His bottom dollar is $3450 ,got him down $500 .

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

I agree that sounds like a fair price. I was goig to suggest $3,000 as a good purchase price, but I would probably suggest $4,000 as a great sales price, so $3,450 is a pretty good meet in the middle. I wouldn't be surprised if you showed up with $3,200 in cash and drove away with it though.

Just beware that best case scenario is 410 rear gears. And worse case is a bunch lower than that. Combined with a non overdrive trans, they can get gear bound depending on what your idea of daily driving is. Not pleasant for too much highway usage at freeway speeds.

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

It wont be used at freeway speeds and my daily commute to work is 7 miles each way .It probably wont be much different from my 1974 short step with 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree and is much nicer than the 74. I have several after my 74 so it will go away if I get the 1 ton.

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

It might be a LOT different than your 1974. I have a 67 C30, and 45 mph and she is pretty wound up. I have a 292 so my engine hits top a little quicker than your will, but I do agree with Tx that it could be pushing it. Test drive the truck before you pull the trigger.

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

A 7 mile commute may be cake for him. I don't know. I do know that my dually with non overdrive 4 speed and 456 gears is just stupid miserable to drive. I literally hit 4th gear at 25 miles per hour.

Sounds like it would be a good candidate for an NV4500 swap. I would love to have something like that...

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

If the truck is as nice as it sounds you can easily turn it into a daily driver. I think what everyone is trying to point out is that in 1972 the truck was not built to be a daily driver, it was built to be a work horse. You probably know that already, but sometimes we get stars in our eyes and miss something obvious. A trans swap like Leon suggests would be the cats meow.
Who knows, maybe someone already swapped transmissions or rearend gears.

The easiest way to research the NV4500 swap would be to type the words "NV4500 swap" into the GOOGLE search box at the top of this page, click on the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com and click on the GOOGLE button you will find lots of threads on the subject. Just make sure the thread you are looking at refers to your style of truck. (Hits will include all years)

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

My 72 C30 has 4.11's which the PO swapped in place of the 4.56s. From what I understand the center section of the HO72 and 52 axles is the same so all you would need is just that. With a 4 speed, the creeper gear still gives you more than enough low end gearing.

I looked into gear vendors in the past, on another truck project they are quite pricey. Somewhere around 3k if i remember.

The price of this truck sounds more than reasonable if its that nice. Even at 4k, still a good price if its good and roadworthy which it sounds like it is being reliable to pull a trailer a good distance. If you pass let me know.

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

I plan on buying it if my insurance company will insure it ,just waiting to call them tomorrow . I figure the nicely restored BuddyBuckets add about $1000 to its value ,he pulled them out of a 67 CST several years back .If I cant get it I will pass the info along to you as I dont think its advertised anywhere ,just sitting in his yard for sale ,at least it was ,he was moving it behind his house until he hears from me tomorrow .Do you have any pics of your truck to share ?

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

Just swap a 4:10 center section in the rear and you would have no problem driving it anywhere. I have 4:10's in several of mine and its much nicer than the 4:57. Sounds like a nice truck, good luck!

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

Thanks for all the responses and hopefully my insurance company will co-operate with me this time .I once found a steal of a deal on a Jeep CJ7 at a garage sale and had the deal done and my insurance company would not insure it or any other Jeep so I had to let it pass ,I still regret that one .

Re: WIW 72 Chevy truck 1 ton

I ran my '70 CST/30 Custom Camper w/TH400 & 4.10s for several years up and down the hiway and everywhere for years. Back then I ran 25-30,000 a year. My work was 30+ miles minimum away and I'd have to run for materials, look at other jobs, hit a couple jobs in different areas in the same day, turn in bills, pick up checks, generally go wherever I had to go,making my total closer to 100 miles on many days. It was a Winnebago in it's first go 'round and I'm sure they went all over the country in it. Some people seem to forget these trucks were perfectly adequate for daily use till we got spoiled by modern conveniences. Overdrive is nice, but not a necessity. That truck sounds like a steal at that price.
