Cool Changing wheel studs on 4x4 77 k10

hey guys i think someone loosened my lugnuts................. when i pulled in the driveway the other nite i heard a clicking sound so i looked when i parked and saw there were 2 lugnuts laying in the street and NONE on my driver side front wheel. so all the studs are ruined. How do i get the hub apart and get the rotor out so i can get new studs put in? any help would be appreciated

Re: Changing wheel studs on 4x4 77 k10

Sounds like someone wanted your wheels and tires...

I'm certainly not promoting autozone, but if you go to their web site, you can find repair procedures that are not so bad...

Remove tire (apparently its about to remove itself)
Remove the caliper and hang it up so there's no weight on the line.
Remove the locking hub. Mine's a 72 and just has 6 allen head bolts holding it on...
Remove the spindle nuts. On my D44 there's a socket for this at O'reilly's. They have a few different ones for different applications.
Now you can get the rotor off and beat out the studs. I think they are in the rotor, not the spindle.

Plan on packing the wheel bearings, replacing the pads, etc.
Check before to see if the ball joints are bad.

That's what I recall from replacing ball joints at least...

Probably time to buy some wheel lock lug nuts.... they may return for your wheels.

It may be time to lie awake at night waiting for them to return. Or, run a video camera at night to hopefully catch them!

Re: Changing wheel studs on 4x4 77 k10

right now it's not driveable though... You have to get a spindle socket from autozone rental (or buy one), pull the spindle & caliper. You might have to seperate the rotor from the inner spindle to get the studs out. I bought some at NAPA for the rear. Easier to press them in and out but oyu can hammer them out, and use a lug nut to pull them tight before reinstallation. Either way you need to get instructions for pulling the spindle because it's important to tighten the spindle nuts properly....

Re: Changing wheel studs on 4x4 77 k10

THe end of this article talks about it. The spindle stays on the knuckle but when you reinstall the hub to the spindle (with the two large nuts and locking ring) then you should tighten it down per the instructions... I might have used the incorrect terms earlier... The studs are in the hub...
