"Manifold Destiny" Car Engine Cooking

This awesome recipe book called, "Manifold Destiny: The one! The only! Guide to Cooking on your car engine!", has various recipes for food to cook, by the heat of your car engine.

By placing the food (wrapped in triple layers of foil) in or on various parts of the motor, there is enough heat to cook them properly. One of the biggest waste of engergy in your engine is heat, so why not use it?

(With the food tripple wrapped in foil, and the engine not flowing fluids like oil and gas all over, there is no worry about the food being contaminated by the motor. If you have oil and gas getting in your food, you have bigger problems than a tainted wiener.)



"Hot Dog Surprise"

Tonight's recipe: Hot Dog surprise. Cut slit down the side of hot dog, stuff with cheese, wrap in bacon "like an old bias-ply tire", and cook for 30-45 minutes...




Hickory smoked bacon, cheese, Johnsonville Brats, for hte lack of hot dog




Cheddar cheese stuffed in.




Wrapped diagonally like a bias-ply tire




Here comes the key to engine cooking, the foil wrap. Neat double folded edges.




Wrapped in many layers




And now comes for placement. The key is wedging the package against the motor so it stays in place. There's enough vacuum lines and such on the passenger side of the intake manifold to hold things down. And always check that the packages don't get in the way of any mechanical parts.

Hmmmm, headers look like a good place for quick cooking...




Now, I work as a pizza delivery driver, so I have plenty of time to test these recipes. And tonight?

SUCCESS!!!!!!

It's a little messy because of the unwrapping, but after about 2 hours the bacon was browning well, nearly done. I was called off work early so I threw it in the oven to finish the bacon but it is DAMN TASTEY.

I tried both places, behind the water pump and on top the intake manifold. Reason behind the pump being a bad spot now that I think about it, is that it's pumping cooled coolant back into the motor, and plus the front of the block/timing cover doesn't get hot. But, on top the intake manifold, against the valve covers, I was cookin' with grease!

Had the night not been so slow (more road time) and maybe just a hot dog instead of a brat, this surely could have been 100% engine cooked. But I was nearly there on my 1st attempt, so I can dig.

This reminds me of growing up in the 70's, my folks belonging to a 4x4 club and manifold burritos!
It does work, no doubt about it.

Heh, It was light driving, only 30-40 minutes of actual road time. I need to try it when I work on a friday.

When I worked in the warehouse at the factory we had about 30 forktrucks buzzing around loading and unloading semi's smelled like a greasy spoon all day. one guy even popped jiffy popcorn on his. We built metal boxes with vents and lids and attached them to the exhaust manifold. Brings back some good memories,Thanks Ray

I used to make manifold burritos all the time when I surfed a lot. Cruise down to Huntington, throw a couple frozen burritos on top the manifold, they'd be nice and hot when I came back out of the water a little later

im the army we used the heavy equipment to heat our cans of soup or beans
but with beans you got to put small hole in top or beans would be everywhere
we would put straight on the turbo and across the heads on the cat motor
by the time we got to the work site the food was done and lunch would be hot.

We used to do that out on the 'ol drilling rig motors back in the 70's. We had a big diesel V8 Scania motor with headers on it. In the summer time that was all we used. Also punched hole in the top of canned foods and cook them in the can on the headers.

I do a lot of day trips and expedition type trips by 4x4. I have a ridiculously overbuilt 1998 Nissan Frontier with a D44 solid axle swap in front, 33's, full exo cage, lockers in both ends, 4:1 crawler gears in the Tcase, etc., but my best mod was the $3 burrito modification. I used a couple of the mainifold studs, bent two little L brackets out of some strap steel, and bolted up my $2.99 Walmart pencil basket. Works beautifully on burritos, hot pockets, etc. About 90 minutes does the trick on just about anything.
