400 Small Block Head Numbers

I got the small block 400 I am going to redo and have a question about the head casting numbers. The heads are 333882 heads and it says they are from a a 70/80 400 engine with 76 cc chamber. Just near the casting number there is the numbers 827 78 cast into the block as well. Is this when the head was cast like I'm thinking 827 is 27th of August and the 78 is for 1978. I can't seem to find any reference to these numbers seaching the web.

Re: 400 Small Block Head Numbers

78 is likely the year of manufacture. Most SB 400's were make from about 1970-1974? and put in full size cars, with 2 bbl carbs only. I have seen 400's in 78-80 4X4 pickups (only seen them in 4X4's, don't know why), these all had Quadrajets on them...

882 heads are the worst large vale small block heads, period.
You need something else. The World Products SR head is excellent!!!

Re: 400 Small Block Head Numbers

Even with 72cc chambers you will need to be careful with your piston choice. Otherwise you may have detonation issues. Of course that is dependent on the cam used. And don't forget that the steam holes will have to be drilled.

Thanks for the tips. I have a very knowledgeable friend who will be doing the engine and he is also a machinist and will be drilling the steam holes. Here are links to the other parts he suggested i get for the build. Its avirgin block and will get a 30 over bore as well.

Re: 400 Small Block Head Numbers

A 406 with that cam will produce excellent low to mid range torque. But with the cams short duration and with those pistons and heads, I would definitely suggest checking the dynamic compression.

I was told compression should be 9.1 or 9.2 with these parts..
