Tinmans 1968 4x4 build - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well bear with me, I am starting my 68' chevy 4x4 with basically a bucket of parts. Let me explain, I bought the blue 1971 4x4 with hopes of restoring it, however, when i bought the truck i didn't do my research enough to find that it was sitting on a later model frame that the previous owner had done a complete hack job on. Therefore, that brought me to buying the black primer 68' in which the body is 100% shot, I did however do my research on this one and it is sitting on a nearly perfect ORIGINAL 1968 4x4 frame with the front end already converted to disc and a good drive line. I then bough a 1968 2wd donar truck that is nearly rust free (will have pictures of it this week) total investment on all three trucks--$1500.00 My first step(and probably the easiest) disassembly. Oh, and advice is always welcomed, lol.

Thanks guys, I'm headed to the sunflower swap meet at the kansas coliseum this weekend so hopefully will come home with some good finds, lol. I'm hoping to find a nice set of front fenders as all three sets I have need a little work. Got the body off of the 68' 2wd last night so hopefully will have the body in to the soda blasters by the end of next week, I'll post more pics this weekend!

Well I just got back from the Media blasters, They are going to strip my entire truck (frame, body in and out, axles/suspension) for about $615 total. Does this sound like a good deal to anyone? They say they are going to use an aluminum oxide to strip the frame and suspension, and then a corn starch blast to soft strip the body?

Well its been slow progress with all the snow we've been getting around here, here are a few pictures of the parts i am pulling from the donor truck. The cab needs some work but is in decent shape. Near as i can tell right now both the inner and outer drivers rocker needs replace as well as the cab supports. The tailgate, i need to replace with one from a chevy instead of the GMC one.

well i thought i would post an update, things have been kinda slow around here lately. After the water pump went out on my dodge last weekend it kinda put a damper on my whole weekend. Also, the weather has been too cold around here to be out in the garage so i spent last night making sure that won't happen again (note picture #1)

I got the cab removed and inpected a little closer so i could get a game plan together to get the rust on the cab figured out. Right now my plan is as follows, drivers side replace cab corner, outer rocker, outer floor/inner rocker combo. Passenger side cab corner, inner cab corner. And then all four cab supports. Let me know what you think! I really don't know which I should start on first....

Looks like you have a great project, are you going to use it as a daily driver, like you I am building a 4x4 and as others have said I like the trucks that have a higher stance. I will be watching best of luck. Here is a picture of my Grandfathers truck and the 1971 4x4 chassis that it will ride on.

Had about an hour to work on the truck tonight so i figured i would pull the drivers rocker off. nothing surprising here i knew the inner and part of the floor is toast. Trying to decide how to go about fitting/installing the outer floor inner rocker combo panel. good news is the "A" pillar looks to be in good shape. The "B" pillar has one hole in it and the rest seems to be solid, i wonder if i could spot repair the B pillar hole?? Hopefully I can get back on it this friday.

Well I got a bit done on the truck this weekend, i got it down to the frame so hopefully i can get it off to to get stripped this following weekend. I also got the tranny/transfer case out. Not sure what the tranny is yet but by the looks of the transfer case it appears to be a 205, though i need to look into it a little more. I started to degrease them both so that i can inspect the condition of them. Hopefully i can just put new seals in them, have them blasted/coated and be done. Although I may try to rebuild the transmission anyhow.
