Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

My brother scored some tickets to the Barrett-Jackson auction.

Thought you might like these.

The lighting made it tough to get good pictures.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

Making progress on the chassis.

Will cut in a drive line loop soon. Need to mock up engine and
transmission to locate transmission mount (again).

Lots of welding to do.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

Rear axel back in for more mock up.

Marked where drive line loop will be cut in.

Thinking I might take some metal to a fab shop and
let them bend the drive line loop.

Also torque arm mounting at the other crossmember.

Nothing too complicated.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

I separated the pedal from the brake mc/booster mounting bracket.

This was neccessary because of the bracing location.

The first pic is where I first mounted it.

After checking where it would be when cab was on it didn't leave a lot of room for access.

I moved it back where resevouir would be under the front of the bed (bed floor will be raised 3 1/2 inches minimum).

The rod length will be about 30" from pedal assembly to mc booster.

It's only tacked in at the moment. Made sure I could R&R the mc without any issues.

Next is mounting the end of the torque arm. I was thinking about a big heim joint.

What do you think Ogre?

It needs up, down, and a little roll action movement.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

Still fabricating and doing mock up.

Need to make trans crossmember for the muncie.

Brake line transition tabs need welding.

Torque arm needs to be finished once pinion angle is set.

Trans crossmember for 700r4 is finished.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

Thanks ChuckDriver.

I decided that a strong chassis was a must.

It should handle any drive train.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

I'm still working on the chassis, but getting close.

Welded brake line transition tabs (is that what they are called?) on.

Ordered another set of stainless braided lines for rear disc brakes.

Did some thermal adjustments to exhaust pipes.

Working on drive line loop. Finding it difficult to get two bends to look alike.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside

i cut the front of the torque arm off and used a trailer spring shackle up to the stock x-member
no grease zerks on the trailer shackle and after 25,000 miles it is starting to rattle
not sure a heim joint would work to keep the side to side movement out

i think i'll replace my trailer shackle with something that has poly bushings in it
with all the poly bushings laying around the shop i'll probably make something to hold the poly with the current shackle

one thing i noticed is your torque arm is real low up front it will not be that low when the truck is together
well actually your torque arm will be at the same height, your frame will be a lot lower
unless your truck is stock height the torque arm should follow the drive shaft
once you get the truck together it will sit 6'' lower, be sure to figure that in when you make the torque arm pivot
