Recovering Door Panels

What are you guys using as far as glue for your door panels? I am trying to wrap my metal door panels in black vinyl and cant get the vinyl to stick in the small indentions (bead rolled parts) very well with my Loctite spray glue. Thanks, Adam

Re: Recovering Door Panels

What year door panel?

In my case with 67/68 door panels, I did not glue to the metal panel. I duplicated what the factory did, and laid thick construction paper with small glue dabs on the corners. Then sprayed 3M upholstery glue onto the paper, then laid felt material, then laid the vinyl on top with a lite dusting of glue. Sprayed the edges, then folded the vinyl over and held in place with box clips.

Re: Recovering Door Panels

Sure, here are a few.
I cut out the holes last with a razor blade, and used a soldering iron for the screw holes.
Afterwards, there was some irregularities with the finish in the vinyl but they cleared up after time.

Re: Recovering Door Panels

A little tip for the do it your selfer. A primer gun will work real good, go to home depot or a hardwear store, pick up some glue used for installing formica, (counter tops) it will be a contact cement glue, usually yellow in color. pour into your primer gun, turn the top adjustment screw all the way in. the gun will spay the glue in a misting pattern. spray the door panel then spray the vinle. Stretch it over the panel removing the wrinkles. then spray the back side the same way. No clips to hold the glue to dry will be necessary. once your done with the glue in your spray gun, clean it out with thinner. I've been doing uphostery for a long time, and this works best! Good luck.

The glue we have used for about the last 30 years is Landau top glue, high heat will not effect it, once it's glued it stays.

Spray both parts, let set till tacky, gets tacky very fast, put together and make sure you have it in the right place or you might not be able to move it.

If you are putting a padding under your door upholstery closed cell vinyl foam
as used in vinyl tops works very well. 1/8 or 1/4 inch it comes 60 inches wide.

As far as a glue gun, there is one made just for this job, it is adjustable and very accurate to apply the glue, once you get good with it you won't even have to mask anything off.

Some people use an old paint gun, problem with that you get spider webs,
and you will have to tape things off.
Hope this gives you a few ideas.
