I need some diagnostic help.

A few weeks back my truck started making what I thought was tire rub on the passenger side when I turned right. Then about a week ago it got significantly worse. At that point I thought, even though I could not see any evidence of rubbing, the "cut" front springs were the issue and installed some 1" lowering springs that brought the front up where it is a much better ride. Not that I thought it had anything to do with this issue at that same time I replaced the steering gear that was badly leaking. I took the truck out for a test drive today and it still has that "rubbing-vibrating" weird noise. It makes that noise only after around a 10 minute or so drive and will do it with only a slight turn of the steering wheel to the right. I am at a loss as to where to look now and would really appreciate any suggestions.

I guess I would check the wheel bearings. Jack that side up and turn the wheel to see if you can feel any roughness in the bearings. Turn it back and forth instead of just one way.

Is it disk or drum brakes on the front?

It is disc, '72 conversion done by previous owner. I guess I left out that I had changed the wheel bearings on that side after the spring change did nothing.

Check the inside of the rim and make sure it isn't rubbing on the outside lip of the lower "A" arm when you turn it. I had that problem with my '67 Chevy Panel Truck when I converted it.

I will take look at that. But I've been driving this truck for many years with no issues until recently. It also doesn't happen until I've driven it for a while. It could have an alignment issue since with those cut springs the PO pulled out the bump stops because they were so close. That is why I changed springs. I hate problems like this!!!!!

Re: I need some diagnostic help.

Not uncommon to have the brake line rub the tire on these disc swaps. They can be a PITA to get clocking and hose length right to keep it out of the way
Tread wear is always a suspect for noises too. It can be hard to see, but you could swap tires and see if it moves

....though I can't imagine why either wouldn't start making noise immediately, rather than after 10m of driving :hmmm:

The two things about this that have me confused are: When it first started it was very mild. Then one day I made a right hand turn and that vibration sound was much worse. Then there is the 10 minute drive thing, that led me to believe it was bearings. But after changing them the problem is still there. That tire thing might be something, there is a heat factor involved there. I think I will switch the front tires. I don't think they are directional. Also I will take a good look at alignment.

Re: I need some diagnostic help.

Look for the date code on your tires and make sure they are not over 10 years old. I've had perfectly good looking tires that were old and they threw the tread off and did body damage. And they are noisy before they throw the tread off or blow out.

Since I had to pull the wheel to see the date code, thanks Cooper, I decided to swap the front wheels. The date code is 10, 2013 so they are old. With the wheels swapped I took it out for a ride and for a while I thought it was going to be good, but it wasn't. It took a little longer, but it is still there.

Re: I need some diagnostic help.

No rub marks on the tire or brake lines, no play up and down or side to side when you wiggle the wheels, no air in the hydraulics? I'm just spitballing at this point

I guess I need one of my buddies to come over so maybe one of us can tell where this noise is coming from if one of us is outside and the other one is tuning the wheel. You don't need to go much over an idle.

If nothing else, it's fun to make your friend run along next to the truck ;-)
