In need of some guidance on a 51 truck

Hey guys I'm looking for advice on my 51. I'm not for sure what the gearing is on my truck, but I do know that it will go 50 mph and sound like its maxed out. My question is if I want to get a little more speed out of it what would be my first move? Should I look into changing the gearing or the transmission?

Thank you in advance!!!

Looks like you have a 3600 truck. Your's will have an open driveline from the carrier on back. One option is finding a 4.11 center section from a 67-72 automatic equipped truck. It'll help a little bit over your 4.57 gears. Another option is finding a 63" WMS 14 bolt and swapping it in.

Take a look at changing out the rear end to and open drive line with some 3:73 or 3:42 gears and install a T5 out of an S10. I've seen the one from Hot Rod Works and it's nicely made. The other two are newer and I'm sure are copy cats of Hot Rod Works, which in-turn is a copy cat of the original, Buffalo Enterprises.

The biggest challenge will be finding a T5 with a mechanical speedo if you're running stock gauges. I think you would be happy with a 5 speed T5 with an overdrive with 3.73 gears.

That truck sure is pretty. Ha ha, the slower it goes the more people can look at it!

Re: In need of some guidance on a 51 truck

Thanks guys I'm planning on leaving it the way it is this year and maybe taking on a project this winter. But I would like to start gathering parts now if I can.

Doug,
I'm pretty sure Mike is sick of this truck it was at his shop for 4 weeks while we tried to find the right E-brake cables and as I was pulling out the wheel cylinder took a crap. Lol I told him I would fix it later.

Got to love old Trucks
