Re: Manifolds VS Headers round two thousand

I've used headers on just about everything since '75 , and I don't see the problem either. More benefits than negative issues in my account. Better mileage is welcomed along with the HP boost.

I've used 'vette ramhorns where our racing class ruled "all cast iron manifolds", but they are the only ones I'd consider ,and they required building a special exhaust to boost their performance.

I'd choose the cam based on the exhaust I am going to use.

Geezer,

What is the part number for those headman headers? They look like mid length. What year is your truck?

Thanks,
Chris

I see a couple of complaints about heat from headers...
A roll of power wrap and that should be fixed?

Re: Manifolds VS Headers round two thousand

Acoording to some test i saw. Ceramic coated headers run about 200 degree while painted headers run about 600-800 degrees. Also Speedway ramhorns probably flow alost as good as cheap headers. And dimpling a set of hooker headers didn't make any difference on a dyno. I run ramhorns but I may try headers . I also agrre with SpecialK. I blow out donuts all the time.

Round two thousand is right. This has been discussed to death and the general consensus is that headers will help make more power *if* your current exhaust is restrictive.

You might want to run a 12 ga purple wire from the starter solenoid to a terminal block on the firewall. Heck, that's not a bad idea even with cast iron manifolds.

Have you tried using a shorter oil filter? For example, a WIX 51069 is approx 7/8" shorter than a WIX 51061. Same is probably true for other filter brands.

Even with a shorter filter, you could wrap the header tubes where they're close to the filter with a product like this:

Re: Manifolds VS Headers round two thousand

Does anyone have a specific part number for a mid-length header that will fit 80-90ish trucks? i have a v2500

One that is in production today? I have called to most manufact'urers and they say no but Geezer on this thread has a set, just no part umber for todays market.

for example this is for 2wd, headman does not know why. just is? I can not see where it would not fit a 4wd

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/he...olet/year/1989

also,, if i search for a V3500 i get some that fit

Any help is appreciated. I would rather not go full length.

Chris

Re: Manifolds VS Headers round two thousand

Bringing this back up. Does anyone have pictures of the 2.5" straight dump Corvette manifolds in a C10? I'm looking at a set of smoothies from Speedway Motors as well as some mandrel bent extensions. I already have a GM mini starter. See the link in my signature for the 78. I want to know if anyone had clearance issues.

The Vette manifolds are different vs the Speedway units as far as clearances go. N2TRUX did the Vette units on his 77 & I recall there were issues w/the fit. Check w/him about the details as I don't recall how bad it was but they did use them.

I was going to run the Vette units on my 64 but they would have interfered w/the R&P steering linkage I needed (PB Dropmember) so I went w/the Speedway units (they cleared).

Cool video.... but I know I want to go back to cast manifolds... I just need to know about fitment in a 1978 2wd Blazer. I want quiet cruiser reliability....low and slow.

2.5" ramhorns don't work in 73-87's. 2"s will with some help.

Do you have any pictures of the manifolds installed? What did yo do for clearance to the starter? Mini starter? How low does the exhaust hang?

Re: Manifolds VS Headers round two thousand

Good tips MikeB. The purple wire extension should be easy and I have some extra header wrap laying around here that I can use on that header.

I use gear-reduction starters on all my stuff (mini-starters) so no issue w/clearance. Both driver & passenger side head pipes are 2.5" @ the outlet flange of the manifold & use 45° or 90° transition bends for optimum routing (mandrel SS bends). Everything is routed above the bottom lip of the frame rail.

I'll get some pics up. The motor mount towers for the PB Dropmember are different vs OE towers. Not sure how much harder it would have been w/the OE towers & mounts.

Here are the pics from my modded 68 frame. PB Dropmember up front w/a gear-reduction starter & 2.5" exhaust.

Yes sir. I started with replacement Vette units (Dorman) but they wouldn't allow for clearance w/the steering shaft to R&P unit when using the Dropmember. I got the Speedway units & they tuck just enough to clear.

I had these coated as well w/a Titanium exhaust coating so that cast appearance in the pics is not 'as purchased'.

SCOTI is the titanium coating a self applied product or from a company like Ruske?

I took them to a guy that does performance engine coatings (like Jet Hot). He does manifolds, headers, & intakes along w/regular powder coating. I had the used headers for my dually done w/the same stuff. The headers still look new after 3k miles.

The manifolds come 'as cast' which is very close in color. I wanted to ensure they stayed that as-cast color for the long term so this was as close as I could get to it vs the bright ceramic polished coatings.
