Brake caliper confusion

So I ordered a inline tube stainless brake hose kit long before I bought my calipers. I ordered a hose kit for a 72 with disk brakes. I later bought 73 hd calipers I think. Anyhow the banjo bolts inline sent me did not fit they were way to big for the calipers I had. They sent me another set of banjo bolts which they said would fit. Don't know the size. Problem is the driver side banjo bolt fits but the passenger side goes straight in barely touching the treads and the first set is still to big for the bolt hole. They are remanufactured calipers. Is it possible that the hole was stripped and it was retreaded when it was remanufactured. I think the 73 calipers use a 7/16-20 banjo bolt. I have no clue what to do guys.

Dunno if this helps, but iirc, the passenger side caliper on the '72 takes a smaller hose than the driver side. Strange, I agree, but I recall running into this several years back.

Re: Brake caliper confusion

The later c10 calipers (80-87) take a 10mm metric banjo bolt.
Still fit the same rotor.
Being a reman caliper, I bet you have one of each.

Re: Brake caliper confusion

I agree with Keith.

If you have the same hoses, the same bolts and the same washers then they should fit both sides the same.

Easy to fix. Just take back the calipers and exchange them for the correct ones. I know I say easy should be easy.

Re: Brake caliper confusion

Not sure about bolt threads but are the calipers on the wrong sides? my bleeders are on top. In the picture it looks to be facing down to the ground. If you were to flip calipers side to side the bleeder will be on top. Would that help with routing?

Re: Brake caliper confusion

I bought these calipers probably a year ago. I don't think the parts store is gonna swap them out. They could be mounted upside down ill have to check that out.

Re: Brake caliper confusion

73 should be 7/16, but the banjo should fit either the 7/16 or the 10mm. 7/16 being a few thou larger. Yeah, good call on them being upside down. You may also have 2 right calipers or 2 left sides

That would be OK, you just have to tip the truck upside down to bleed the front brakes Good call

Re: Brake caliper confusion

Yeah that makes since. I'll swap them around. I guess I need to find out what size bolts I have and go from there.

Re: Brake caliper confusion

i left the banjo bolt out on mine. I drilled out the hole in the caliper and tapped it 1/4 npt. installed a 1/4 to 1/8th reducer(brass) then I used a 45 degree #3an fitting to hook up my brake hose. The 45 points the hose straight forward.

Yes. Just get the correct banjo bolt.
The 71-72 rotors are the 1.25" width version.
The 71-72 standard and drop spindles only use a 1.25" width rotor.
Spinde, rotor width and caliper ALL have to match.
The only caliper that won't fit is the 81-87 light duty version for 1" wide rotors.
Make sure you purchase the 71-87 HD version.
But the banjo bolt size will depend on what year core the caliper manufacturer used.

Thumbs up Re: Brake caliper confusion

When I bought new S/S hoses from off E bay
Hoses unlimited. They said 71 brakes are a 1 year design.
72 up will fit 73 up until the change year.
I had replaced my calipers several years before and remembered this info after calling them about the hoses not fitting. So I had to send the 71 hoses back and he sent me the 72 up hoses. No problems after that and it was my fault but he took care of it for free no extra charge.
Info:
72 up calipers are a lot easier to come by and will fit up to the 80 models.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Getting the 71-72 drag link will make your life easy.
Direct bolt on with 71-72 tie rods.
DONE.

You CAN use your 68 centerlink.
You will have to:
1) move your 68 OUTER tie rods to the INNER location.

2) purchase a set of Converison tie rod adapters.
(these are $50-$60 and many companies sell these)
They are 5/8" on one end and 11/16" on the other.

3) then bolt on a 71-72 OUTER tie rod to connect to your spindle.

It's POSSIBLE to use your 68 drag link,... it's just more complicated.
I found this out when I put 71-72 McGaughy's spindles on my 69 swb.

It would have been SO MUCH EASIER to use 63-70 conversion spindles.
I learned the hard way,...
