Exclamation 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

So im not really new here but i just figured out yesterday how to start a new thread! LOL. But Last January i picked up a 72 GMC 2500 4x4 longbed off of Craigslist. It had a meyers plow and a lot of new parts. So i drove 2 1/2 hours to look at it, aw i instantly fell in love with'er. No mufflers, the heat worked, and so did the plow. I even drove it 200 miles to carlisle last summer with no floor pans or driver side seat mount. I also hauled 1300 lbs of steel to the scrap yard with 3 bolts holding the severly rotted bed on! And the last trip she had on the road before the project started was a 40 mile round trip with a 20 foot tandem car trailer to pick up the new bed. I guess you could say i had a lot of faith in a rust bucket with 228,000 original miles! So heres my SLOW progress on it. So far i have junked the old bed and bought another one off of a guy on this site. Also i did the driver side rocker and pans.

Re: 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

Lol i will be patching all the holes and eventually putting 8 lug axles back under it. Somebody switched out the original 8 lug Dana 60's for these little Dana 44's 6 lugs in the late 1990's. I dont know why they would do that though? Also maybe in the future im planning to drop in a stock 402 with A/C and throwing a 700r4 in it. But simple for now, Back to original! I have some pics i have to upload of my latest junkyard finds and progress on her! Stay Posted!!!!

Re: 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

Haha how do you like the "AIR BRAKE" pedal pad. I picked it off of and old 84 ford F-8000 at work. Fits right on our year trucks, its funny when people ask if it really has air brakes! The frame is Eastwood Chassis black, looks pretty good for free paint!!

Re: 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

Last night i cranked it up for the first time in 2 weeks and the choke set and idled high, but after the temp reached about 170-80 i kicked it down to regular idle. Then the temp got to 210, and the engine just started to mis and pop and ping. I have had distributor problems before and it is HEI. The problem is is that the new HEI is a lil bigger than a points dist. and it hits the firewall, sooo i think its another cracked dist cap. That still doesnt explain the temp being that high, after 190-95 the thermostat opens up. Any help guys?!

Re: 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

Today i wet sanded the driverside bedside and primed it using "Duplicolor Paint Shop" Primer. Came out BEAUTIFUL! But, when i went to clean my gun... It wouldnt clean up. Turns out the stuff i used was LAQUER! Laquer primer...never heard or it. Regular paint thinner wouldnt clean it, SO i had to jump in the 9C1 Caprice and fly to the Home Depot for a pint of laquer thinner before my brand new Devillbiss gravity feed gun dried up into a big clunk of paint! All worked out good though!

Re: 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

Wow it's been a while since i posted, Finally making some progress on the 72. Just ordered parking brake cables from Inline Tube. They are the only company that makes a complete set for the 67-72 4x4's. LMC or classic industries or brothers does not have them. Or anybody else for that matter. $182.10 was the grand total, not to bad for somthing that is a must!

Re: 72 GMC 2500 "Project Powder Blue"

On the distributor, have you replaced your cab bushings? An HEI is really close on a 4x4, but usually new cab mount bushings will raise the cab back up enough where it isn't an issue.

No i havent replaced the cab mount bushings, i was thinking about it when i did my floor pans, (instead i used a small piece of rubber off an old bias tire and 5 washers!! SHHH!!) But I will definitly buy correct bushings now because you're right it will bring it to stock level and the HEI will fit. Thanks alot!
